Rich history and culture are two of the things that Philadelphia is best known for, so it would be a real shame to visit this city without checking out its museums. The largest city of Pennsylvania is home to quite a few amazing museums that you can explore, and these three are a good place to start.

Philadelphia Museum of Art

One of the most popular tourist attractions in this city, the Philadelphia Museum of Art is home to over 240,000 works of art, covering everything from paintings and sculptures to photography and armor. Its dramatic staircase is one of Philadelphia’s main landmarks, so make sure to snap a pic during your visit.

Penn Museum

The University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology is commonly known as Penn Museum. With over 1.3 million artifacts on its premises, it’s one of the world’s most comprehensive museums covering this subject matter. It’s located inside an impressive building with a dramatic rotunda and extensive gardens.

Please Touch Museum

Touching artifacts is strictly forbidden at most of the world’s top museums, but this one turned that rule on its head. Please Touch Museum is an interactive, hands-on museum that’s aimed at young children, making it perfect for family visits.

For avid travelers and hikers, climbing the highest peak in each state is a big goal that takes years to accomplish. Some mountains may take days to summit and require experience, while others are short strolls. If you want to knock off two in one day then head to Maryland and Pennsylvania for two short, but rewarding hikes to the highest points of each state.

In Maryland, the highest point is called Hoye-Crest and it’s about a two-mile hike round trip. You will be rewarded with great mountain views and some picnic benches at the top.

Only an hour north of Hoye-Crest, is Mount Davis, the highest point in Pennsylvania. You can either drive straight to the top or do a combination of one to five-mile hikes depending on how much time you have. In the fall there are great foliage views, and in the summer, the Allegheny mountains provide a nice green scenery.

In between you can stop at the smallest Post Office and smallest church in mainland America, both right next to each other in Silver Lake, West Virginia!

The town of Centralia, Pennsylvania looks like a scene from an apocalypse movie. This small coal-mining town has a fascinating story that makes it an interesting visit.

In 1962, a few of the residents burned a pile of garbage outside of town, but the fire quickly spread to the underground coal mine causing a raging underground fire. Within a couple of years, the town was uninhabitable and full of sinkholes, burnt trees, and high levels of carbon monoxide.

Centralia today has a cracked and abandoned highway running through the center filled with painted words and art known as “Graffiti Highway”. There are almost no houses left as only 6 residents remain out of the 1,000 that once called Centralia home.

Perhaps the biggest attraction is the Ukrainian Catholic Church which still stands tall thanks to the solid rock beneath the building. There are still services held here with returning residents, so please respect the “No Trespassing” signs.

Although the fire has calmed down in the past few decades, scientists predict that it may burn for another 250 years or so. If you are lucky you can catch a glimpse of the smoke still rising from the ground on cold days!
