Bioluminescence is the light that is emitted by living organisms. You don’t only have to seek out the stars for a grand natural light display. Try out these top locations for fantastic bioluminescent light displays.

Mosquito Bay, Vieques, Puerto Rico

Experience one of the most otherworldly sights that you can on this planet: the underwater lights at Mosquito Bay. Gently paddle over the water in a wooden canoe and feel like you’re cruising through open space.

Jervis Bay, Australia

This spot is home to a strain of plankton that emit a strange glowing light when disturbed. Catch them in season and you will witness a sublime sight of luminescent waters of all shades of the rainbow.

Torrey Pines State Beach, San Diego, California

Mysterious scenes emerge when the waves start breaking on this Californian beach. The movement of the waves makes the local Dinoflagellates light up, so that from the beach the horizon looks like a bright shimmering haze.

Punta Cocos Beach, Holbox Island, Mexico

At night this sandy beach is transformed into a miraculous sea of bright blue lights.

Preservation Bay, Tasmania

An uncanny blue light is often seen burning below the calm waters of Preservation Bay. This unnerving sight is caused by the large number of plankton in the area.

Many tourist destinations are only open in the summer because that’s when most people travel and go on holiday. But the Coudersport Ice Mine is only open in the summer—because it melts in the winter!

The Coudersport Ice Mine in Pennsylvania is a true natural phenomenon that scientists are still studying. The ice forms in early spring and gets bigger and bigger as the summer gets hotter. As the weather gets colder in the fall, the ice begins to melt and by winter, it is all gone!

Year-round thermometers and instruments help keep track of how this incredible ice mine works but the idea behind it is quite simple. Pockets of cold air are stored from the winter cold, and when the warm air arrives in the spring, it pushes the cold air out through a vent and creates ice. In the summer, the warm air is stored and when the winter cold arrives, the warm air is pushed out and melts the ice.

The Ice Mine is located in Coudersport, PA, in Potter County, an area so beautiful that it is known as “God’s Country”. It is open in the summer and costs only $5 to enter. For that low price, you can see a natural phenomenon and cool off from the summer heat!

Our planet is amazing! Everywhere you look you can find something new and exciting, but if you’re looking for that extra hit, read about some of the most spectacular places the Earth has to offer.

Moreau, New Zealand

These large, extraterrestrial round stones can be found on Koekohe Beach, in New Zealand. The ‘Moeraki stones’ were originally created at the bottom of the sea, by laying layers around the core, just like pearls around a particle of sand. Some of the rocks weigh several tons and are three meters wide.

The Blue Hole, Belize

The great blue hole in Belize is one of the most impressive natural beauties in the world. It’s 300 meters wide and about 150 feet deep, and was probably created by the sudden rise in water levels centuries ago. Divers report that the hole is packed with diverse wildlife – some of it still unknown to science and can only be found here.

Eye of Africa, Mauritania

From space, this mysterious hollow in the Sahara Desert in Mauritania really looks like a human eye. Some say that the eye was created after a meteor crashed into the ground, while others believe it to be a trace of an underground nuclear explosion. Whatever it is, it looks like a sci-fi movie scene.
