Even if you’re not a history buff, it’s undeniable that visiting a medieval city leaves an impression. Europe boasts a great many authentic city centers which tourists can explore, here are three of the very best.

Tours, France

The capital of the stunning Loire Valley, this city offers winding streets and stunning buildings dating from the medieval-era onwards. With ancient markets still taking place daily, and a generally relaxed way of life, stopping by in this city for a few days really does feel like stepping back in time.

Ghent, Belgium

From the giant replica of a medieval feasting-hall in the center, to the beautiful churches, Ghent offers travellers a sense of a bygone age. Although not technically medieval, check out the famous altarpieces in Ghent’s cathedral, painted by the Renaissance master Jan van Eyck. Then, wander the pretty cobbled streets with a tasty Belgian waffle in hand, admiring the canals and the boats gliding by on them.

Siena, Italy

A long-standing rivalry with its neighbor Florence meant that Siena gradually added to its urban developments, until its center developed into one of the most stunning urban areas in all of Europe. There are many museums and galleries in Siena, but you may wish to simply wander the streets, taking the beauty, grandeur and history in.

Whether you’re seeking to step back in time, or simply want to experience some beautiful architecture, visiting some of Europe’s medieval cities is a must-do.

Considering the medieval era ended over 500 years ago, it’s quite impressive that some cities of that historic time still stand today. Here are four incredibly well-preserved European medieval cities that will make you feel like a time traveler.

Bruges, Belgium

Bruges was a major center of trade and culture between the 12th and 15th centuries. The great majority of the city’s medieval architecture remains intact, creating a beautiful gothic cityscape.

Citta di San Marino, Italy

San Marino – the only surviving city-state in Italy—sits atop the majestic Monte Titano, which is the highest point in the country. The center of Citta di San Marino is surrounded by a fortress and watchtowers, built between the 11th and 14th centuries.

Monsanto, Portugal

While it may not look like a typical medieval town, the mountainside village of Monsanto is a historical gem. What makes this town stand out, besides its uniquely Portuguese medieval architecture, are the gigantic boulders that define its landscape. The streets are too narrow for modern vehicles, so the preferred method of transport in Monsanto is walking or riding a donkey.

This charming Spanish medieval town located in the mountainous region near Valencia was declared to be a national monument in 1961. Here’s what you can expect from a visit.

Ancient City Walls

Walk along the ancient walls that have defended the town for centuries. These ramparts offer terrific views of the warm sandstone houses and the beautiful mountainous landscapes that surround them.

Torre del Andador

Built at the highest point of the walls and on the edge of a cliff, this Muslim watchtower was built in the 10th century.

Catedral de Albarracín

Built in the 15th century, this majestic Roman Catholic church has been renovated to reflect its former glory. You can now see the traces of the Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles incorporated within it, as well as the vibrant frescoes inside.

Castillo Musulmán De Albarracín

The city’s castle dominates the skyline. Sitting proudly atop the highest mountain in the area, it regally surveys the town and the surrounding countryside.

Bouldering

Due to the highly prevalent red sandstone rock formations in the area, the town is also a center for bouldering. This is a form of rock climbing that uses shorter rocks but only uses the hands. No harnesses!

During Medieval times, many new cities were built in Germany. They were mostly located near fortified castles but they were independent in terms of trade and were having their own laws. Below are three such cities that still hold some of the old magic and a trip to any of them will take you back in time.

Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber

Located in northern Bavaria, Rothenburg ob der Tauber is known for its medieval architecture. The city is a great example of a stunning renovation job because almost half of it was ruined or damaged during World War II. Rothenburg was founded in 1170 and if you want to learn more about the darker side of Medieval times, you should visit the Medieval Crime and Justice Museum.

Goslar

Goslar, a town settled in Harz Mountains, has many medieval artifacts. Here you can see the 11th-century Imperial Palace and its historic murals, a church with stained-glass windows that date back to the 13th century, etc.

Quedlinburg

Quedlinburg is another town located in the Harz Mountains. It has one of the biggest collections of timber homes in Europe and it’s still in its original state. You can learn more about medieval architecture in Fachwerkmuseum, a unique museum that dates back to the 13th century.

What is spectacular about Carcassonne, however, is its medieval walled city. Located on top of a hill just to the west of the modern city’s center is the largest and best-preserved medieval walled city left on Earth.

The citadel, which was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997, is a spectacular example of a fortified city. Visitors to Carcassonne are consistently blown away by its excellently-preserved architecture.

The medieval walled city is full of family-owned, traditional French restaurants and shops. Here, visitors can try “cassoulet,” a meat and bean stew that’s the most typical dish of the region.

When visiting the Cite de Carcassonne, an obligatory thing to do is to visit the 13th century Carcassonne Cathedral. The gothic building is a beautiful piece of art dedicated to Saint Michael.

Finally, all visitors should visit the Chateau Comtal, the highlight of the city. This restored 12th century castle once housed the royalty of the city in the times of the Kingdom of Aragon.

Traveling to Carcassonne is like going back it time. Make sure to visit!
