The Inca Trail is one of the world’s most iconic treks, winding through Peru’s lush cloud forests all the way to the ancient city of Machu Picchu. There are a few things to know about the Inca Trails before seeing them for yourselves.

There is a daily hiker limit

The Inca Trails are strictly limited to 500 people per day. Roughly half of these spots are occupied by porters and guides leaving only 250 permits a day for trekkers from all over the world.

The Best Time of Year to Hike the Inca Trail

Peru has two seasons, dry and wet. It’s possible to do the Inca Trails in either season, but each comes with its own pros and cons. During the dry season, which takes place from June to August, the chance of rain is significantly lower, obviously. However, it’s the high tourism season in Peru, so the Inca Trail will be at full capacity every day.

How Fit Do You Need To Be?

Although the Inca Trail isn’t exactly a walk in the park, you do not have to be the most experienced hiker to do it. Of course, the more fit you are the easier the challenge will be.

If you’ve just recently swallowed the travel bug, or you’ve been traveling for decades, it’s never too late to take on new challenges. When it comes to visiting iconic destinations, perhaps one of the biggest challenges one can take is to visit the seven wonders of the world.

We aren’t talking about the seven wonders of the ancient world, which includes landmarks you can no longer visit. We’re talking about places you can literally see today—as long as you have enough time and money. Here are the seven wonders:

The Taj Mahal – Agra, India

The Taj Mahal was made as a tribute of love by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan for his deceased wife Mumtaz Mahal. Incidentally, the site itself is just as beautiful as the original reason it was made.

Machu Picchu – Peru

It’s not hard to see why this 15th-century Inca citadel would be a fun place to visit. The scenery is just breathtaking, and its polished dry-stone walls are truly impressive.

Christ the Redeemer – Rio De Janeiro, Brazil

A statue of Jesus Christ made of reinforced concrete and soapstone, it’s a breathtaking work of art that one can appreciate even if they aren’t necessarily religious.

The Colosseum – Rome, Italy

You can choose to either focus on or ignore the Colosseum’s fascinating, albeit barbaric history—and in the process appreciate how majestic it is.

Chichen Itza – Yucatan, Mexico

This archaeological site was built by the Mayans and is the most visited location in Mexico. Go there to learn more about its fascinating history.

Petra – Ma’an, Jordan

Also called “Rose City” due to its gorgeous color, this archeological city can be explored after entering a 1.2 kilometer-long gorge.

The Great Wall of China – Huairou District, China

There are few places on earth that are quite as jaw-dropping as the Great Wall of China. As the name suggests, the wall extends a whopping 13,170 miles.

For anyone interested in indigenous history and cultures, Machu Picchu is a must-visit in order to gain a deeper understanding, knowledge, and respect for the peoples that once inhabited the Americas before the arrival of European colonists.

Located at an altitude of 2,430 meters on top of a ridge in the Andes, overlooking the Urubamba River valley, Machu Picchu also offers a gorgeous natural landscape to all visitors. The dramatic, snow-capped peaks of the Andes contrast with the fertile green of the relatively low land in which Machu Picchu is located.

Machu Picchu itself was built by the Inca in the 15th century, just before the arrival of Europeans. It is a citadel, meaning that it served as both a town for the culture’s people as well as a defensive lookout from which the tribe could guard themselves from potential invaders.

Many activities happened in Machu Picchu, from agriculture to religious services. Still visible are terraces that once served as a place from growing the crops that fed the residents of the citadel.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bs1pD5qlLvt/

The reason that Machu Picchu is so intact and well-preserved is because Spanish conquerors never found it. Although the original residents died because of smallpox brought by the Europeans, it remained undiscovered until 1911.

This wonder is an unforgettable destination for all visitors that are lucky enough to visit it.
