Jaipur is known as the pink city of India thanks to the many vibrant buildings scattered around it, but its forts deserve as much attention. If you’re in the mood to explore the architectural richness and history of this Indian city, make sure to check out these three magical spots.

Amber Fort

This stunning hilltop palace was built in the 16th century and it’s one of the first places people think of when someone mentions Jaipur. You can explore several different sections during your visit and marvel at its red sandstone walls, courtyards, gates, and cobbled paths.

Jaigarh Fort

This fortress was built to protect Amber Fort from attacks and it’s located on the hill underneath it. That’s one of the reasons why their design bears several similarities, and they’re even connected by subterranean passages. Jaigarh Fort is also worth the visit because it offers sweeping views that you can’t find anywhere else in Jaipur.

Nahargarh Fort

Located on the edge of the Aravalli Hills, Nahargarh Fort is another great place to get amazing views of Jaipur. It’s been around since the 18th century, and you can now find several tourist attractions on its premises, including the city’s wax museum.

A trip to Jaipur is incomplete without a visit to Amber Fort and Hawa Mahal, but these aren’t the only breathtaking spots this city has in store. Jantar Mantar is a safe haven for astronomy lovers visiting India’s Pink City, and it’s home to the world’s largest sundial.

Jantar Mantar is conveniently located just a short walk away from Jaipur’s City Palace. It’s open between 9:00 am and 4:30 pm every day, with the exception of national holidays. The entrance ticket will set you back by around $3, but you can also buy a collective ticket for several other Jaipur attractions.

Jantar Mantar presents a collection of architectural astronomical instruments that have been around since 1734. Jaipur’s founder Jai Singh II, who had a great interest in mathematics, architecture, and astronomy, ordered the construction of this monumental astronomical observatory in Jaipur and several more Indian cities.

The main goal of this construction was to gather the most accurate astronomical data possible. Jantar Mantar is home to 19 instruments for measuring time and determining the position of celestial objects. Many centuries later, they’re considered outdated, but astronomy lovers still enjoy visiting this spot and celebrating its historical and architectural value.

Jaipur is known by the nickname Pink City, and if you’re looking for one single building that fully captures its spirit – Hawa Mahal is the one. It’s one of the most picturesque attractions of this Indian city, and here’s a couple of tips you should use to take a perfect photo.

Early Bird

If you want to capture Hawa Mahal in its full glory, make sure to get there early in the morning. In addition to being less crowded, that’s also the time when this palace will look its best because the sun will amplify its color.

Better View

You don’t actually have to be at Hawa Mahal to capture spectacular photos of this building. Check out some of the cafés on the opposite side that offer amazing views, such as Wind View Café and The Tattoo Café.

Focus on the Details

India is home to many majestic temples, tombs, and palaces, but there’s something that separates Jal Mahal from the rest. This tiny palace is located in Jaipur, and it’s quite a marvel to see it in person because it seems like it’s floating on water.

Jal Mahal literally translates as “Water Palace”, which is quite fitting, given the circumstances. Despite pretty amazing optical illusion, this structure isn’t really floating – four additional levels are actually submerged under the water.

The walls of Jal Mahal create a stark contrast to blue waters of the Man Sagar Lake, but this wasn’t the original plan for this building. Madho Singh I, who ordered its construction, only wanted to use it as a hunting lodge, but his son had different ideas after being enchanted by its beauty.

If you ever find yourself in Jaipur and want to enjoy the look at this incredible attraction, make sure to pay it a visit in the evening, as well, because it looks even more stunning when it’s illuminated. It’s currently only accessible by the boat, but we’re pretty sure you’ll be impressed by it even if you only see it from the shore.
