Cusco, Peru is one of the most fascinating cities in South America and the beginning point of many an excursion to the archeological site of Machu Picchu. Located at over 11,000 feet above sea level, it can be hard to get your body adjusted to the lack of oxygen in the air in this Peruvian city.

However, with these tips, you will find that your adjustment to Cusco’s elevation will go much smoother.

Drink Coca Leaf Tea

Coca leaf tea has been used for centuries by the native Incan people in Peru to lessen the effects of altitude sickness. While its science isn’t fully understood, people report having more energy and fewer headaches after consuming this ancient drink.

Build Up Physical Activity

Instead of hitting the ground running with a day full of activities upon arrival in Cusco, take things easy at first and gradually build up your levels of physical activity in order to let your body get acclimated to the high elevation. If not, you could find yourself incapacitated for days.

Stay Hydrated

One of the biggest allies in the fight against altitude sickness is hydration. Be sure to always have a bottle of water with you, and do your best to consume at least two liters of it per day in order to avoid dehydration, a common side effect of altitude sickness.

Sometimes, if you want to see something spectacular, you can’t stay down low! Taking a trip to a high-altitude capital city is a unique way to see destinations that you might’ve never imagined.

Here are the four highest-located capital cities on Earth that you can visit.

La Paz, Bolivia

The capital of Bolivia is the highest capital on Earth, located at nearly 12,000 feet above sea level. Its location high in the Andes Mountains gives it a spectacular backdrop, and visitors have the ability to see lots of beautiful architecture dating back to the colonial era.

Quito, Ecuador

Another South American capital comes in at 2nd on the list, located at almost 9,500 feet above sea level. Quito is a treat, and was even named a UNESCO World Heritage site due to its treasure of having the largest preserved old town in all of the Americas.

Bogota, Colombia

The third-highest capital on Earth is also located in South America! Bogota, Colombia’s capital, has a ton of cultural attractions and a world-class museum scene. Don’t forget to try delicious Colombian food such as arepas if you go, too.

Thimphu, Bhutan

The tiny capital of the Asian country of Bhutan, with a population of just over 100,000, checks in at fourth on the list. This capital hosts all kinds of Buddhist monasteries and holy sites, and is a very unique destination to visit.
