Whether you’re planning for your first big trip or just going away for the weekend, there are certain items that you should always pack that expert travelers never leave home without. These items are not only practical, but they will save you a lot of time, energy, and money when you’re en route and once you’ve arrived at your destination.

Portable Charger

If you have a portable charger, you definitely need to bring it with you when you travel. Especially if you’re in a big city and you’re planning to be out all day and into the night, your phone is likely going to die. Conversely, if you don’t have one bring along your regular charger with you and ask coffee shops or restaurants you visit if you can charge it there.

Medicine

Although you can always pick up medicine when you need it, it’s better to carry around some pain relievers or stomach medicine so you don’t have to waste time and money buying them when you need them.

Ear Plugs

Especially if you’re going to be staying in a hostel situation where there will be people and sounds all around you, bring along some ear plugs. Even if you’re staying in a hotel or apartment, there might be a noisy street outside and sleep is key!

Nothing is worse than going to the airport and losing tons of time waiting to go through security to get to your flight.

Many a-day at the airport have been ruined by long wait times, rude security staff, and rules that just don’t make any sense.

Here are four tips that will help you get through airport security faster.

Get Behind Business Travelers

One easy hack for getting through security fast is to find the line with the most business travelers. These people tend to be more used to going through security and thus get through the line more quickly than families, for example.

Keep Your Electronics Accessible

In this day and age, you usually need to take out larger electronics such as laptops and tablets to get through security. Keep them in an accessible place to expedite the process.

Pack Your Liquids in a Transparent Bag

Liquids shouldn’t be thrown into your bag willy-nilly if you want to go quickly. Security scans usually ask for these liquids to be packed together in a plastic bag to facilitate the process.

Keep Calm

Finally, don’t panic! You’re more likely to forget to remove something or make a mistake if you’re stressed. Keeping calm will make your security experience way better.

It’s hard to avoid over-packing sometimes. If you’re a cautious person like me, your instincts probably tell you to bring everything that you might need, “just in case.”

However, over-packing can lead to an overly stuffed and heavy bag, and sometimes even takes up space for things that truly are necessary!

Here are four common items that are packed in luggage but should really be left at home.

Too Many Shoes

While it might be tempting to pack a pair of shoes for every possible occasion on your trip, the truth is that shoes are heavy and take up lots of space. Limit yourself to the basics and the pair or pairs that are truly needed.

Shampoo and Body Wash

There’s really no reason to pack these shower essentials when traveling. Unless you’re staying in a bare-bones hostel, these things will probably be provided by wherever you’ll be staying.

Extra Jackets

If you are traveling to a place that will require a jacket, keep it simple and don’t pack too many. For example, traveling to Russia in the winter is probably only going to require a heavy jacket, so why overpack with a light one?

Towels

The same thing that goes for shampoo and body wash, goes for towels. There’s no need to pack them if your accommodations are going to provide them!

If you’ve caught the traveling bug bad and you’re itching to book your next flight, go for it! If you’re at a crossroads and aren’t sure about where you want your next adventure to be, check out this guide.

Weather

When you think about somewhere you want to go, think about what kind of climate you want to get into. If you’re someone who hates being hot, you might want to reconsider going to Thailand in July. Check out online places that fit what kind of weather you’re looking to experience.

Money

If you really need to stick a budget during your travel, prioritize going to places that don’t cost a lot of money to enjoy. A good way to determine if a place is cheap or not is to research how much a standard beer costs. If the country has a lot of taxes, it’ll be high. But if not, you can safely assume most other things will be cheap as well.

Time

Depending on how much time you can dedicate to a trip is an essential factor to consider when you plan a trip. If you have one week off work and somewhere you want to go will take you 12 hours on a flight, that means you’ll be spending two full days in transit and not actually on vacation.
