Amsterdam is more than just picturesque canals and bike-filled streets. In fact, the capital of the Netherlands has a rich culinary heritage. Here are some must-try dishes that encapsulate the essence of Dutch cuisine to try on your next trip.

Stroopwafel

A Dutch delicacy that both locals and visitors love, the stroopwafel is a thin, crispy waffle filled with a layer of caramel syrup. You can often find these delightful treats at street markets or specialized bakeries.

Bitterballen

Bitterballen are iconic Dutch snacks, resembling small, crispy croquettes filled with a savory blend of minced beef or veal, roux, herbs, and spices. Served with mustard for dipping, these flavorful bites are a favorite in Amsterdam’s pubs and cafes/

Pannenkoeken

Pannenkoeken, Dutch pancakes, are larger and thinner than American pancakes and can be served sweet or savory. Whether topped with powdered sugar and syrup or filled with cheese and bacon, these versatile pancakes are available in many eateries across Amsterdam.

Haring (Herring)

For seafood enthusiasts, trying haring, a raw herring dish, is a must. Served traditionally with onions and pickles, you can find this snack at haring stands around the city. Embrace the Dutch way of eating haring by holding it by the tail and taking a bite!

Many articles have been dedicated to breakfasts around the world, and at this point, we’re all familiar with the great morning food offered in the US, England, and France. So we thought we’d highlight breakfasts you could have if you travel to two slightly less popular destinations.

Hagelslag (The Netherlands)

Many cultures have sweet food for breakfast but seeing a Dutch person eating bread with chocolate sprinkles may still be confusing. They may seem like sprinkles used for cake decorating but in the Netherlands, they are called Hagelslag (“hailstorm” in Dutch) and they are one of the nation’s favorite foods. For breakfast, have a fresh slice of bread with a thin layer of butter and sprinkle the hagelslag of choice: fruit, chocolate or, if you’re up for it, anise-flavored.

Arepas (Venezuela)

Despite the fact that not many people outside of South America have heard of it, the arepa is considered by many to be the best breakfast in the world. This Venezuelan treat is, in fact, a tough one to beat. The arepa is a cornflour bread pocket filled with cream cheese, avocado salad, or perhaps eggs and beans. You can make it as nutritious as you’d like, and it’s guaranteed to keep your belly full for hours.
