One of the most significant expenses when traveling is food. That’s because traveling more or less necessitates going out to eat quite a bit, which adds up quickly, especially compared to the cost of cooking at home. But if you’re staying in a hotel room, there are actually a few meals you can make fairly easily from the hotel that will save you a lot of money—and taste good, too.

Panini

Panini sandwiches are some of the most delicious around with their warm, toasty bread and gooey, melted cheese. And you can actually make them in a hotel room with just some aluminum foil and the iron your hotel provides. Just build your sandwich, wrap in foil, and press with the iron on the hottest setting with no steam. Heat each side for three to four minutes and voila! Panini.

Salad

As long as you can get some salad greens, ingredients like shredded carrots, a can of tuna or chickpeas, and dressing in the local grocery store, you can make a salad in your hotel room. Just pop everything into a Tupperware container and shake it up to mix!

Rice and Veggies

Did you know that you can cook rice in a coffee maker? You can also use it to steam foods like veggies and hot dogs for a meal complete with all of the macronutrients and some micronutrients, too.

For years, writer and a home cook Skye McAlpine has documented her love affair with Venetian home cooking on her dedicated blog and Instagram page – a love that found its way into several cooking books. Based between Venice and London (at least when traveling is permitted), McAlpine has amassed a massive following online, thanks to her scrumptious recipes that invite the reader into the Italian kitchen.

“I was born in London and grew up in Venice (my family moved there from England when I was six years old), and now I divide my time between the two cities,” McAlpine further explained in an interview with Julia Berolzheimer. “I guess because I’m from one place and live in another. I don’t really feel properly British or properly Italian—but a lot of both!”

This naturally also affects McAlpine’s cooking style. “I cook largely Italian food, but one of my favorite recipes is my Auntie Effie’s butter shortbread—and that’s about as British as you can get!” she jokes.

And while we still test the waters when it comes to travelling, there’s no stopping us from exploring Italy through our taste buds. McAlpine’s recipes include traditional Italian dishes as well as reinvented favorites. Those include classical Risotto, Scallops on the Shell with Pistachio Gratin, Grilled Radicchio with Pomegranate, and Chocolate and Amaretto Custard.

“Risotto is such comfort food,” says McAlpine, “but the touch of lemon makes it a lovely, delicate and elegant dish. The kind of thing you could happily eat on the sofa straight from the pan, or proudly serve at a dinner party. Also: I always have a few lemons lying around in the kitchen and rice in the cupboard, so it’s the kind of dish that I can easily throw together without thinking.”

Whether you travel for work or are on vacation and are sick of eating out, you can actually make amazing meals in your hotel with no equipment necessary!

While you do need some materials like bowls and a knife, you can usually get that from the front desk or even just buy them at a cheap store, which will still cost less than a meal out!

Salmon

You can actually make salmon if you have a hot water kettle or even a coffee pot! Just boil water and pour it into a bowl, or use the pot of the coffee maker if that’s all you have, put the salmon in, and leave it to poach until the salmon turns pink!

Couscous

Couscous is a great grain that’s super versatile and tastes great cold or hot. Just boil water again, pour it over the couscous and cover it with a plate or towel for 10 minutes until it’s absorbed. Serve with raw or cooked veggies and enjoy!

Rice Noodles

Rice noodles are great because they also only need to be soaked, but take even less time to make than couscous! Just pour hot water over them for a few minutes, drain the excess, and use in a salad or other noodle dishes!

Although it’s only about an hour from Tulsa, Pawhuska, Oklahoma has a real small town feel with one exception: the mass hoards of tourists that come to get the Pioneer Woman experience by eating and shopping at her establishments.

Most people in American and beyond now know Ree Drummond, also known as the Pioneer Woman on the Food Network. Her show has stretched way beyond just television, and she now owns several stores and different restaurants in her hometown of Pawhuska.

Ree first started off with The Mercantile, or “the merc” as she calls it, which is a bakery, comfort food restaurant, and also store that sells many home-goods that she has personally selected. Now, she also has a pizzeria aptly called P-Town.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BvYF2niJXc5/

Beyond just the downtown, in the summer if you’re willing to take a drive out to the Drummond Ranch, you can actually get on a free tour to see the lodge where Ree does all of her cooking!

So, would you take the chance and try to catch Ree’s attention? Even if you don’t get so lucky as to see her, it’s so intersting to see how big of a deal Ree is, and how she has really saved the downtown portion of Pawhuska with her fan power.
