If you’ve just recently swallowed the travel bug, or you’ve been traveling for decades, it’s never too late to take on new challenges. When it comes to visiting iconic destinations, perhaps one of the biggest challenges one can take is to visit the seven wonders of the world.

We aren’t talking about the seven wonders of the ancient world, which includes landmarks you can no longer visit. We’re talking about places you can literally see today—as long as you have enough time and money. Here are the seven wonders:

The Taj Mahal – Agra, India

The Taj Mahal was made as a tribute of love by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan for his deceased wife Mumtaz Mahal. Incidentally, the site itself is just as beautiful as the original reason it was made.

Machu Picchu – Peru

It’s not hard to see why this 15th-century Inca citadel would be a fun place to visit. The scenery is just breathtaking, and its polished dry-stone walls are truly impressive.

Christ the Redeemer – Rio De Janeiro, Brazil

A statue of Jesus Christ made of reinforced concrete and soapstone, it’s a breathtaking work of art that one can appreciate even if they aren’t necessarily religious.

The Colosseum – Rome, Italy

You can choose to either focus on or ignore the Colosseum’s fascinating, albeit barbaric history—and in the process appreciate how majestic it is.

Chichen Itza – Yucatan, Mexico

This archaeological site was built by the Mayans and is the most visited location in Mexico. Go there to learn more about its fascinating history.

Petra – Ma’an, Jordan

Also called “Rose City” due to its gorgeous color, this archeological city can be explored after entering a 1.2 kilometer-long gorge.

The Great Wall of China – Huairou District, China

There are few places on earth that are quite as jaw-dropping as the Great Wall of China. As the name suggests, the wall extends a whopping 13,170 miles.

The Colosseum, Croatia

The Colosseum in Rome is one of the most famous tourist attractions in the world, but few people know about its twin in Pula, Croatia. The ancient Roman amphitheater in Pula is the only arena in the world with four towers still standing!

📍 Pula / Amphitheatre . ▫ The Pula Arena was constructed in 27 BC – 68 AD and is among the six largest surviving Roman arenas in the World. It is the only remaining Roman amphitheatre to have four side towers and with all three Roman architectural orders entirely preserved. The exterior wall is constructed in limestone. The part facing the sea consists of three stories, while the other part has only two stories since the amphitheatre was built on a slope. The maximum height of the exterior wall is 29.40 m (96.5 ft). The first two floors have each 72 arches, while the top floor consists of 64 rectangular openings. The arena had a total of 15 gates. A series of underground passageways were built underneath the arena along the main axis from which animals, ludi scenes and fighters could be released. The amphitheatre was part of the circuit of the gladiators. ▫ 📸 ✔ Congratulations and thank you @dorpell for this beautiful photo! 👏 Check his gallery for more great content !

Big Ben, Canada

Canadians have their own Big Ben which is very similar to the original one in London. This building is in a neo-gothic style and bears a huge clock tower. Just like Big Ben, but in Ottawa!

Stonehenge, Avebury

At Stonehenge, you can’t touch the stones, you can’t go inside the circle and if it starts raining there isn’t a place you can hide, not to mention the entire visit will cost you a small fortune. But, only 30 kilometers away you can find a very similar setup, that won’t cost you a dime!

Acropolis, Turkey

The ruins of the old city, the remains of ancient theaters, and the pillar temples are always associated with Greece. But Turkey also has something to show. The ancient city of Ephesus has as much historical value as the Acropolis and it’s free to visit any time of the year.

Italy is one of the most visited countries in the world due to its rich history and gorgeous nature.

The Colosseum is still one of the most popular attractions in the world and over 7 million people come to see it every year. This outstanding building is the largest amphitheater that was ever built and continues to capture peoples’ interest with its beauty and mystery.

Even though there are lots of things that we now know about the Colosseum, here are some facts that may interest you before you go and pay a visit.

  • Flavian Amphitheater is the original name of the Colosseum. It was called that because it was built during the rule of Emperor Vespasian.
  • Even though Emperor Vespasian is responsible for the Colosseum, he never managed to see the public opening.  Instead, it was his son Titus who had the honor of opening the Colosseum with 100 days of games.
  • There was a lot going on under the stage. The gladiators along with the animals would wait under the floor until it’s their turn to fight. There were over 30 trap doors that were used during battles to surprise the opponent and this amazing section is now open for the public eyes.
