Tenements were large buildings constructed with cheap materials that had many apartments housing families on a rental basis. They were built and inhabited as tenements mostly around the 1800s and 1900s and nowadays a few places around the world invite visitors to learn about the history of life in the tenements.

New York

By far the most famous tenement museum is located in New York City’s Lower East Side. The area was home to immigrants from various countries, many willing to do whatever it took to remain in the United States, even live in deplorable conditions. The museum includes guided tours of apartments inside two of the historic buildings, as well as walking tours around the neighborhood, telling the stories of the generations of migrants who lived in the city in previous generations.

Dublin, Ireland

14 Henrietta Street in Dublin’s North Side is the historical home of Dublin’s Tenement museum. The building is a Georgian townhouse that’s remained intact since its construction as homes for the wealth in the mid-18th century and became tenements in the early 20th century. A ticket includes a tour of the building that includes the stories of the 100 people who called 14 Henrietta Street home.

The city of lights has many landmarks that it’s famous for, and the crowds of tourists usually gravitate towards the most popular ones. But if you want to experience Paris in a different, more relaxed way, as well as avoid waiting in neverending lines for the Louvre or the Eiffel Tower, you can take a detour and still see some of the more hidden gems the city has to offer.

Shakespeare & Company bookstore and café

Located at 37 Rue de la Bûcherie and filled to the brim with literary classics as well as a variety of newly published books, this bookstore is an absolute must-see for every book lover. The trademark dark green exterior is hard to miss, and the cozy interior invites you to spend hours casually browsing books, with a cup of your favorite coffee or tea in hand.

Le Petit Moulin

This little cafe is located in Montmartre, very close to the famous Moulin Rouge, but what makes this place particularly charming is the fact that it was used as the set of the movie Amelie. For fans of the movie, being here can be a surreal experience, but even for casual visitors, it is a great space to rest after hours of walking and sightseeing.

The Wall of love

This giant wall, composed of blue enameled lava tiles on which the phrase “I love you” is written 311 times in 250 languages, is a little harder to locate, but if you step into the Jehan Rictus garden square in Montmartre, you’ll be sure to find it. The mural was created in 2000 by the French artist Fédéric Baron, and it is the perfect spot for picture-taking, especially if you’re visiting it with your loved one.

The most popular time of the year to travel is in the summer. Good weather and vacation time go hand in hand, and millions of people make the trek from their hometowns to different cities around the world during the months of June, July, and August.

It’s important to be comfortable even when the mercury climbs. So, here are four tips that will help you stay cool while exploring cities this summer!

Wear Light Fabrics

“Light” in this case refers to two things: both the weight and the color of the fabric.

Avoid dark colors and heavy fabrics like wool in order to keep your body cool in the summertime.

Drink Lots of Water

Water is your best ally against overheating. Keep a liter or so of cold water in a temperature-resistant thermos and carry it with you, being sure to drink regularly!

Seek Out Spots with Air Conditioning

Instead of roasting outside all day, it’s nice to get a break inside an air-conditioned space at times. Grab a quick lunch or snack in a place with air conditioning in order to cool off.

Free Your Feet

It’s amazing how much wearing socks can make you feel hotter. Wearing sandals helps you feel much more fresh and cool during hot weather travel!

The Pretty Cities provides snapshots of a wide range of cities, from large, internationally-known capitals to smaller and more unknown cities that have a charm that many haven’t experienced.

Urbanism is enough to excite any city lover, and the harmonious blend between shops, pedestrians, commuters, and tourists define the environment of any city that experiences tourism. The Pretty Cities puts the focus on places where this blend has been achieved.

Barcelona, Spain

With fascinating history and architecture and rich nightlife, Barcelona has plenty to offer. The capital of Spain’s Catalonia region has several beautiful beaches that both locals and tourists adore.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Copacabana and Ipanema are probably the most famous beaches in the world and they’re both located in Rio de Janeiro, one of the biggest cities in South America.

Cape Town, South Africa

From Table Mountain to numerous beaches and museums, Cape Town is a South African city you should visit at least once in a lifetime.

Tel Aviv, Israel

Israel’s Tel Aviv is a cool city with a rich history and culture, but its beaches are one of the city’s main attractions. With around 300 sunny days per year, it’s a safe option for a perfect vacation whenever you go.

You book the flight, and you’re ready to travel!

Fast-forward to three months in the future, when you’re about to board your flight. What if you realized that you never did any research about the city you visited. Is this going to be a wasted vacation?!

Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be. Nearly all cities with any type of tourist tradition offer tours of their historic centers and their most important sights for visitors to see. These walking tours are a fantastic way to get an overview of the must-see spots at your destination, and it does the majority of your prep work for you!

Instead of desperating flipping through a tourist attraction book or a website before arriving at your destination, I recommend booking a city walking tour instead. It’s best to do it at the beginning of your trip in order to get oriented and have a feel for the city.

They’re inexpensive, informative, and a fantastic resource for smart tourism. Take advantage of walking tours!

Microhotels have started popping up in big cities like New York and London in an attempt to bring down the accommodation cost for young tourists who don’t need huge rooms on their travels.

They are the answer to the millennials’ problem of affordable travel that was nearly impossible for those not interested to stay in hostels and share rooms with as many as a dozen other people.

One such hotel is Arlo NoMad, located in NYC. There are similar ones around the world, including One Bunk in Tijuana, Mexico and The Modernist in Thessaloniki, Greece.

Small rooms and spacious common areas prove to be the winning formula for many young travelers today, so it’s no surprise that hotels like this keep appearing all around the world.
