Okay, so you want to travel. But you’re also on a budget. There are plenty of ways you can save money abroad from entertaining yourself with free activities to cooking in your hostel instead of eating out. But, unfortunately, flight tickets are expensive no matter what. Right? Well, maybe not… Here are some tips for finding the cheapest flights.

Be Flexible

The number one best way to score a cheap flight is to be flexible. Being flexible about your travel dates, which airlines you want to take, and even the exact destination airport will help you get the most affordable possible flights.

Join a Cheap Flight Mailing List

Every so often, a flight will pop up that is just ridiculously cheap and worth much more than it costs. Of course, finding all of those and compiling them is basically a full-time job. So instead of doing it yourself, consider signing up for a newsletter that does it for you, like:

  • Scott’s Cheap Flights
  • Airfarewatchdog
  • The Flight Deal
  • Holiday Pirates
  • Secret Flying

Mix Airlines

Instead of booking your ticket with one airline, which will only show you connecting flights run by them and their partners, using a flight search engine like Kiwi or Skyscanner that scans all different airlines can help you save a ton of money.

Basic economy is one of the new buzzwords in flying. More and more traditional, non-low cost airlines are now offering up a type of ticket with this name which offers up a cheaper option to flying.

Basic economy typically does not include any baggage (including hand baggage), a choice of seats, or any type of cancellation or change flexibility on your ticket.

So, how do you know if this option is right for you?

Basic economy is great if you find a significant price difference between a regular seat and a basic economy seat. Even if you have to take hand luggage or if you want to choose a seat, you can usually do so at a price that won’t make it any more expensive.

Also, if the days of your trip are set in stone and there’s no chance that you might have to make a change or cancel, basic economy is great because you won’t have to worry about losing your money.

Short trips are another great reason to choose basic economy, as you probably won’t need to check baggage and run up the fees on your flight in this way.

So, there are definitely situations where flying basic economy is the right choice if you want to get a deal. Go ahead and try it, and see what you think!

Whether you live in Europe or not, you probably want to thoroughly explore it at least once in a lifetime. Your trip across the Old Continent will probably go smoothly because it’s extremely easy to navigate.

Public Transportation

European countries offer quick, versatile, and affordable public transportation systems. In most major cities, you can pick between subways, trams, and buses, and quickly get from point A to point B if you don’t have time to explore top tourist attractions on foot.

Easy to Navigate

If your goal is to visit as many countries as possible, Europe is a good place to start. Many countries are in close proximity to each and offer fast trains and reasonably-priced buses, making it possible to quickly cover a lot of ground.

Cheap Flights

Even if you don’t have enough time for a road trip around Europe, you probably won’t spend a lot of money on your flights. Many budget companies, such as Wizz Air and Ryanair, operate on this continent and cheap flights are extremely easy to find.

The mysteries of air travel can be a difficult puzzle to solve. Why is it that direct flights are so expensive sometimes, whereas connecting through an out-of-the-way city can be so cheap? Why can flights in February be half of the cost of flights in July?

Well, while ticket prices might seem to make little sense sometimes, there are some tips that you can use if you are looking to pay less. They won’t always work, but these days typically offer flights for less than other days of the week. Here they are!

Tuesday

Tuesdays are typically the cheapest day to fly. Why? Well, business travelers tend to leave on their trips on Mondays in order to take advantage of the first day of the week. As leisure travelers typically don’t go anywhere during the week, airlines often lower prices on Tuesdays due to lower demand.

Wednesday

Flights are typically pretty inexpensive on Wednesdays too, for largely the same reasons that they are cheap on Tuesdays. Almost no one leaves to go anywhere new on a Wednesday unless it’s peak travel season.

Saturday

While it might seem surprising, Saturdays are often a chance to fly for less. Why? Weekend travelers tend to leave on Fridays and go home on Sundays, meaning that Saturdays are a relatively uncommon day for travel. So, if you have a free Saturday, why not catch a flight?

Planning on taking a vacation and want to make sure your budget is utilized efficiently? Check out our top tips for bagging a cheap flight so that you can spend your money when you’re there, rather than on getting there.

Avoid Peak Times

If you have the freedom to book a vacation at any time, avoid the school holidays. Prices skyrocket around the summer break and at Christmas time, prices nearly tripled. The best time to book is on offpeak months like October and February.

Browse Incognito

When you repeatedly look at a flight, the prices increase. The airline sites do this to scare you into buying a ticket on the spot before the prices increase further. To avoid this, browse in private mode.

Use Skyscanner

Skyscanner is our favorite site for comparing flights. They offer the best prices and don’t randomly inflate costs.

Fly to a Nearby City

If you are going on a long trip, it might be worth flying to a cheaper city near your destination. For example, if you are traveling to Europe, you may be able to get a flight to somewhere like Venice for very cheap and then easily get the bus to your final destination. This is also a way to see more places.

Fly With Hand Luggage

Often, flights are affordable until you factor in checked luggage. To avoid these extra baggage fees, travel light. If you’re traveling with a friend, one checked suitcase between you along with your hand luggage should suffice.

Book Ahead of Time

If you know when and where you are headed, don’t hesitate. Tickets seldom get cheap over time. And there’s no time like the present.

Buy a Return

Buying a return flight or multi-city ticket will usually save you a few bucks down the line. At off-peak times, return flights and single flights are usually fairly similar in price anyway.
