On the coast of South Carolina lies Charleston, a city brimming with Southern charm and rich history. Known for its well-preserved architecture, cobblestone streets, and warm hospitality, Charleston invites visitors to step back in time while enjoying contemporary comforts.

As you wander through the historic district, the past comes alive. The colorful Rainbow Row, a series of pastel-colored houses along the waterfront, offers a perfect backdrop for a leisurely stroll. Don’t miss the Battery, a landmark defensive seawall and promenade, famed for its stately homes and stunning views of Charleston Harbor.

Charleston’s culinary scene is as diverse as its history. From traditional Lowcountry cuisine to modern Southern fare, the city’s restaurants are a delight for foodies. Seafood lovers will relish the fresh catches from the Atlantic, especially the celebrated shrimp and grits.

History enthusiasts will appreciate the many museums and historic homes that tell stories of the city’s past. The Charleston Museum, America’s first museum, and the magnificently restored Aiken-Rhett House provide insightful glimpses into the antebellum South.

For a touch of nature, the nearby Magnolia Plantation and Gardens offers breathtaking gardens, while the beaches at Sullivan’s Island provide a serene escape.

Charleston’s blend of historical intrigue and Southern charm makes it a must-visit destination. Whether you’re a history buff, food enthusiast, or simply seeking a charming getaway, Charleston warmly welcomes all.

Here are three places that you must see while in Charleston.

Fort Sumter National Monument

The American Civil War started when the Confederate Army launched an attack on this sea fort, which was built for the War of 1812. Now, the site is a historical monument whose fascinating history can be seen by visitors with their own eyes.

Despite its reputation as a rural place, the reality of the American South is that there are tons of cities to enjoy and visit. Perhaps the soul of the South is best captured in its small cities, which combine rural traditions with the comforts and architecture of population centers.

Here are three of the American South’s most charming small cities that you definitely have to add to your must-visit list.

Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston, South Carolina is a perfect representation of what the South has to offer. Colonial-era homes and old plantations stand alongside barbecue and seafood joints where the aesthetic might be barebones, but the food is unbeatable. Take a stroll by the palms along the Atlantic and take in a deep breath: you’re in paradise.

Asheville, North Carolina

This mountain hamlet has long been known as an outlet for creativity and expression. From the theatres and art galleries to the dozens of craft breweries that line its streets, Asheville is quirky, fun, and one-of-a-kind. Everyone feels at home and welcome here.

Charlottesville, Virginia

My favorite college town in the South is Charlottesville, the city which hosts the University of Virginia. Its scenic location in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and its rich history, including Thomas Jefferson’s 18th century home, gives Charlottesville plenty to see and appreciate.

Charleston, South Carolina is a southern slice of heaven. This city was established in the late 17th century, and its historical prevalence in American history is shown through the architectural elements within the city, the cuisine, the monuments, and landscapes. Charleston has become a really hip city known for its high-end restaurants, shopping, and more. With all of the different activites and sites to see, there is something to do for people of all ages. So if you’re looking to vacation in a place that has so much more to offer than just the ocean, come to Charleston and have a true southern experience.

Where To Go

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bhpp_fjHaKv/?tagged=charlestonhouses

Charleston is known for its pastel antebellum style houses. These houses hold so much history from the outside and on the inside. A great way to get a history lesson while admiring the truly spectacular architecture is by going on a walking house tour. Many important politicians and writers have resided in Charleston, and going on a walking tour allows your experience to be as fulfilling as it can be.

However, if you are looking to save on money, simply walk around the many beautiful neighborhoods of downtown and enjoy. No matter what, you have to see Rainbow Row, which is the largest row of Georgian style homes in the US.

One area you have to hit is the Battery. This area of the city is famous for being a defensive seawall during the Civil War as well as having some out-of-this-world homes. Take a walk in this area and enjoy the views of the water and many sculptures that are scattered throughout.

If you want to see grandiose plantation-style architecture, go over to the campus of the College of Charleston. This university was built in 1770, making it one of the oldest institutions in the country. The campus is lined with Spanish moss trees, buildings with huge white pillars, and cobblestone walkways. The campus is also famous for being the site of the movie The Notebook, so go on over and see it for yourself!

Beaches

There are many beaches just outside the city, and they are all truly beautiful. Folly Beach is one of the closest beaches to the city, but it does tend to get more crowded. If you are willing to drive a bit further, Sullivan’s Island is a beautiful getaway and very romantic. Isle of Palms is also wonderful and very kid friendly.

Where To Eat

The food in Charleston is really unique and very much different that what you would find in the rest of the country. Known as Lowcountry food, this type of cuisine focuses on local ingredients and utilizing the sea for inspiration. The restaurant FIG has classic southern cuisine with a sophisticated twist, perfect for experiencing really elegant southern food. One dessert you have to try above all is a praline. A praline is a sugary nut treat that Charleston is famous for. You can find them in most shops in the city and you will be instantly addicted once you have one.
