Spain is an incredible country, with so many different things to see and do. If you’re visiting, be sure to check out one of its many castles – the three listed here are just some of the stunning, historical sites you can enter around the country.

Alcazar Castle, Segovia

If you think this medieval masterpiece looks familiar, it may be because this structure inspired Walt Disney to create the now beloved ‘Cinderella castle’. This castle is open daily to visitors, and if you are checking it out you will need to allow plenty of time, because the castle and its grounds are massive! Dating from the 12th century, the site holds many fascinating artefacts and information for you to check out.

Tossa de Mar, Costa Brava

Although this castle may be on the smaller side, the backdrop is pretty unbeatable. Nestled between golden sand beaches, if you climb the castle ramparts you will be treated to a stunning view of the sea and the pretty town which sits beside it. This entire area is known for its beautiful beaches, and it is also relatively quiet. Just an 80 minute drive from Barcelona, be sure to check it out if you are in the area.

Loarre Castle, Huesca

Situated just over an hour’s drive from the city of Zaragoza, this 11th century castle is in an almost intact state, making it a popular destination for history buffs. Take in the castle, and then take in the stunning rural scenery – as this castle is located in the north of Spain, it is far less crowded and busy than other areas.

Spain is a country that likes to do things exceptionally well, and its castles are no exception. Whether you want the grand majesty of Alcazar Castle, the seaside beauty of Tossa de Mar, or the rural seclusion of Loarre, each castle offers a spectacular and unforgettable experience.

Edinburgh is a wonderful city in Scotland that has incredible history and architecture. It has as much to offer in winter as it does in summer, and here are three things you must see on a trip to Edinburgh.

Edinburgh Castle and The Royal Mile

Edinburgh Castle is a mostly intact medieval castle that was the stronghold of the Kingdom of Scotland for many centuries. Built into the natural rock that sits at the top of the Royal Mile, it is full of fascinating history. Afterward, you can walk down the Royal Mile, which is an equally historically rich walk down the streets of Edinburgh that culminates at one of the royal residences, Holyrood Palace.

Arthur’s Seat

Arthur’s Seat is an ancient volcano that is only a short walk from the center of Edinburgh. It climbs 823 feet (251 meters) and offers amazing views of the city. It has also featured in many films, including Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting.

Edinburgh Zoo

Edinburgh Zoo is open all year round and is one of the UK’s best-loved zoos. It has been the only place to see Giant Pandas in the UK for the past twelve years, and although they are returning to China at the end of 2023, the zoo has hundreds of other animals to see including lions, bears, and even a Scottish Wildcat.

Nottingham is a vibrant city in the Midlands of England that is often overlooked considering the abundance of things it has to offer. Here are three things that Nottingham has to offer that make it a must-see for travelers to the UK.

Nottingham Castle

Nottingham Castle is situated right in the heart of the city center and its placement at the top of a hill means it has excellent views across the city. The castle has a fascinating history and was the residence of the Sheriff of Nottingham, as well as an important site of battle during the English Civil War. The oldest pub in Britain, ‘Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem’ is also nearby and well worth a visit, the interior of the pub is built into the caves underneath the castle.

Sherwood Forest

Sherwood Forest is the home of the legend of Robin Hood and used to cover an enormous expanse of Nottinghamshire. Though it has been diminished by woodland clearance in the past few centuries, it is still a forest of great significance, being home to some of the most ancient woodland in the UK. Not least is the Major Oak, which is estimated to be over 1,000 years old.

Wollaton Hall

This country estate is placed right on the edge of Nottingham and has been used as a location for many films, notably as Wayne Manor in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy. With over 500 acres of parkland to explore and regular art and history exhibitions in the Hall, Wollaton has lots to offer for all the family.

This truly historic site was built in 1520 and is considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1982. The Belém Tower was built on the banks of the Tagus in Lisbon in order to defend the city, and years later it was repurposed as a lighthouse and then a customs house.

The tower was designed by Francisco de Arruda, a Portuguese architect and artist. It includes five floors and a roof terrace. The first floor has 16 cannons installed in 16 windows as well as prison pits. To climb up to the other floors you might have to wait for others to climb down, since the staircase is very narrow.

From the west, you can see the Belém Tower’s gargoyle, shaped like a rhinoceros, probably created after the first rhino arrived in Portugal in 1513 and impressed the artist.

Edinburgh, which is the Scottish capital, is a medium-sized city of just under 500,000 located on the coast of the North Sea. The city is divided into two main sections, the Old Town and the New Town, which are recognized together as a UNESCO World Heritage site due to its history and architectural beauty.

In the Old Town, you can find the picturesque and haunting Edinburgh Castle. This former royal residence is located on top of Castle Rock and provides a panoramic view of the city. Here, you can explore the castle grounds and even see an old cannon fired at 1 pm every day.

The Old Town also hosts St. Giles’ Cathedral, a beautiful Gothic church located on the main thoroughfare of this part of town, the Royal Mile.

Be sure to check out Calton Hill in the New Town, too. From here, you can experience sweeping views of the city and its castle. You’ll also see Scotland’s national monument and other statues depicting Scotland’s turbulent history. It’s an experience you’ll never forget.

In short, if you love culture, beautiful sights, and history, Edinburgh must be at the top of your list.

One of the nicest things to do in Europe is going to see a castle. Most countries have their own rich history and a medieval past that’s still present through castles scattered around the countryside or even in the main cities. If you’re into European castles, these make a good start.

Château de Chantilly, France

This castle is exactly what we have in mind when we imagine a medieval castle. Only an hour’s drive from Paris, walking into this castle makes it feel like stepping back in time to the era of knights and glory. The castle was destroyed during the French revolution but was rebuilt in the 19th century and the grounds include spectacular gardens and ponds that stretch on an area of 115 hectares.

Bran Castle, Romania

This castle is located more specifically in Transylvania, home to the infamous count Dracula, or Vlad The Impaler. This castle is known as Dracula’s Castle. It dates back to the 14th century but has seen some difficult times during the 19th century. In the early 20th century it was restored to its full Gothic glory.

Neuschwanstein Castle, Germany

This is a Romanesque-style castle located in Bavaria which is considered Germany’s most visited castle. This is probably due to its fairy-tale-like towers. It was built in the 19th century and was the inspiration to the castle in Disney’s Sleeping Beauty.

Located in the far northwest of the Spanish community of Castile and Leon sits the city of Ponferrada. Surrounded by the mountainous terrain of the El Bierzo region, this picturesque small city is a truly hidden gem.

Among the buildings of Ponferrada’s historic district stands the Castillo de los Templarios, a castle dating back to the 12th century. Built during the reign of Ferdinand II, this castle was built to protect the region as well as the pilgrims that walked through the city on their way to Santiago on St. James’ Way.

Still preserved and standing today, the Castillo de los Templarios can be marveled as a beautiful example from the Middle Ages of religious architecture.

Towering over the Sil River, visitors can marvel at the stones that give the structure its classic form and facade. It’s easy to feel like a Templar Knight while walking through the walls of this gorgeous structure.

With the entrance to the complex only costing 6 euros, and free admission offered on Wednesdays, visitors to Ponferrada absolutely must take advantage of the opportunity to visit this gorgeous castle.
