Want to make your visit to Vienna, Austria, a bit more eventful? Then you should consider setting some time aside to make a day trip outside the city borders. Several amazing destinations are easily reachable by bus or train from Vienna, and you shouldn’t miss out on the opportunity to explore them. Here are the best you can pick.

Bratislava, Slovakia

It will take you just an hour with a train to reach Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, from Vienna. The city is small enough that you can explore all of its top tourist attractions in just one day while offering a unique experience thanks to its castles, cobblestone streets, cultural offerings, and amazing food.

Melk Abbey

If you are a history buff, then you should pick Melk Abbey. Situated above the small town of Melk, the complex is famous for being the final resting place of several members of Austria’s first ruling dynasty, the House of Babenberg. It is renowned for its exceptional Baroque exterior and astonishing inner decorations that consist of paintings, frescoes, and historical artifacts. Its library is a particular point of interest because it contains various rare medieval manuscripts.

Salzburg

A trip from Vienna to Salzburg usually takes around two hours, but it is well worth it. The city is the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and houses one of the most-renowned musical conservatories at Mozarteum University. You can feel its musical vibe on every corner, but Salzburg will also charm you with its architecture and rich cultural heritage.

Castles and Palaces

From medieval castles to baroque palaces, Bratislava will wow lovers of all different styles of architecture. Bratislava Castle and Devin Castle are two of its most popular attractions, but you should also consider checking out Presidential Palace and Primatial Palace during your visit.

Churches and Cathedrals

If you’re a fan of Art Nouveau visiting Bratislava, the Blue Church is the first place you should put on your travel itinerary. It’s one of the city’s most vibrant attractions, but Bratislava is home to several more stunning religious buildings, including St. Martin’s Cathedral.

Bridges

SNP Bridge over the Danube river is one of the symbols of Bratislava, but it’s not the only amazing bridge this city has in store. Apollo Bridge is just as equally impressive, but you should also check out the city’s oldest standing bridge known as the Old Bridge, which underwent extensive reconstructions that were finished in 2015.

If you’re an art lover who enjoys exploring galleries and museums in each new city you visit, Nedbalka Gallery is just the thing for you. It’s one of Bratislava, Slovakia’s most picture-perfect attractions—and not just because of the works of art that grace its walls.

Nedbalka Gallery showcases work of artists who have been active from the nineteenth century to the current day. It features five floors, mostly covered with the paintings of prominent visual artists, who were crucial in determining the nature of artistic development in Slovakia.

You don’t have to be an art fan to appreciate this gallery. Its interior is truly breathtaking, and its circular design with a large round opening in the roof is an amazing backdrop for all sorts of creative photos.

You can actually get a couple of great shots before even entering Nedbalka Gallery. Floating umbrellas are located right outside the gallery, and they feature beautiful criss-cross embroidery inspired by Slovak artists.

The nightlife in this capital city isn’t burning like other capitals in the area, like Budapest or Prague, however, the Slovakian bars still have a charm of their own.

Slovak Pub

With 11 rooms, the Slovak Pub is definitely one of the biggest and well-known bars in the Slovakian capital. The interesting thing is that each room portraits a different era from the Slovakian history. Due to its uniqueness, the Pub is popular not just among tourists, but many local Slovaks and university students come here for a drink as well. Here, you can also taste Slovakia’s traditional cuisine.

Ufo Watch.Taste.Groove

If you are looking for the best panoramic view, then the UFO Bar is the perfect choice for you. All you need is to walk across the SNP Bridge and take a 45-seconds-long elevator ride to reach the 95-meter high view. You can choose between twelve different cocktails, a variety of wines, beers and spirits.

Papichulo

Chic interior is what describes this bar best. It also offers a three-hour happy hour, and has house music nights, beer pong parties, televised sports matches, and karaoke nights. The most interesting thing is that in the past Papichulo used to house public toilets.

The Bratislava Castle

The Castle is the iconic symbol of the city of Bratislava, and it is located on a hill. For an unforgettable experience, we suggest that you go up by foot; it will take only 15 minutes. It is worth for the fabulous panoramic view! You can also enter the castle and explore the Museum of History or casually stroll through the beautiful Baroque gardens. There is a cafe as well, where you can enjoy the view.

The Museum B-S 4

The Czechoslovak Fortification Museum is located in an underground bunker just outside of the city. It was set up for the soldiers during WWII, so you can also see weapons which were used during the past century.

The Festival of Light

The Festival of Light is one of Bratislava’s main events. It is held in September when the weather is enjoyable. At the evening you can enjoy the historical buildings of the Old Town lit up for the Festival. A green laser beam reflects from the UFO Tower to the St. Michael’s Gate to the Cumil statue and back.
