Most people start their journey through Bolivia from its capital La Paz, and you can find many stunning natural wonders in its close proximity. If you’re in the mood for a day trip that you’ll never forget, here are three stunning attractions that will take your breath away.

Moon Valley

Moon Valley aka Valle de la Luna is one of Bolivia’s most accessible natural marvels because it’s located just 10 kilometers from La Paz. Its show-stopping rock formations and tall spires were created by the erosion of mountains, and they’ll make you feel like you’ve stepped on the surface of the Moon.

Chacaltaya

La Paz is surrounded by many stunning mountain peaks, and Chacaltaya is one of the most accessible since it’s located 30 kilometers away from the city. The Chacaltaya glacier and a ski resort were once located on its premises, but it’s now mostly known as a hiking attraction with scenic views.

Illimani

The highest mountain in the Cordillera Real, Illimani is heaven on earth for hikers and climbers visiting Bolivia. You can see it in the distance before even leaving La Paz, but you should consider heading there if you’re in the mood for a grand adventure since it’s home to Bolivia’s second-highest peak.

Nestled along the border of Bolivia and Peru, in the heart of the Andes, Lake Titicaca is one of South America’s most treasured gems. The largest lake in this corner of the world, this breathtaking body of water deserves a spot on your bucket list, and here are three reasons why you shouldn’t miss it while exploring this continent.

Natural Beauty

Lake Titicaca will introduce you to the natural beauty of South America in a whole new light. Perched at an elevation of approximately 12,500 feet, it’s one of the world’s highest lakes, and its crystal-clear waters and surrounding islands offer a breathtaking panorama that has to be seen to be believed.

Floating Islands

One of the main reasons most people visit Titicaca in the first place are countless floating islands that stand out as its true marvel. Crafted by the skilled hands of the Uros people, these tiny islands have been constructed using the totora reeds that flourish in the lake’s waters, and they offer a unique look at the lives of this indigenous Bolivian community.

Historical Tapestry

Lake Titicaca is a great place to explore the rich historical tapestry of the Inca civilization. Some historical records even describe it as the cradle of the Inca civilization because the legend has it that the sun god himself was born here, on the Isla del Sol.

Travel is what you make of it—from the beaches of Cancun to the deserts of Morocco, every place has its own unique characteristics that have the potential to leave a lasting impression, but rare are those so extraordinary that they can only be described as once-in-a-lifetime. Whether you’re looking to plan a special vacation or just want to add some new places to your bucket list, read on to learn more about some of the most incredible destinations worth visiting at least once in your life.

Uyuni Salt Flats, Bolivia

Spanning over 11,000 kilometers, the Uyuni Salt Flats in the Andes of Bolivia stand as a colossal mirror that reflects the sky above. While the flats appear bright white when dry, during the rainy season, a thin layer of water collects and creates the optical illusion of an infinite landscape. Beyond being an incredibly cool experience, they also make for great photos.

Vatnajökull National Park, Iceland

Iceland has no shortage of sights and attractions worthy of a spot on every traveler’s bucket list, but for a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience, the Northern Lights alone are worth the trip. The Lights can be seen from many locations around the country, but for optimal viewing conditions, we recommend getting out of the city and into the wilderness at Vatnajökull National Park, a massive nature reserve largely free of light pollution.

Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

Volcanoes National Park in East Africa is a dream destination for adventurous travelers with a penchant for wildlife. The expansive stretch of rainforest is home to about 1,000 mountain gorillas, and each day, a limited number of visitors are able to embark on a journey to witness these majestic creatures in their natural habitat. Combined with the breathtaking beauty of the landscape, a trek through the park is sure to leave a lasting impression.

If you’re a fan of all things spooky, you probably enjoy discovering scary places in each new country you visit. Despite being best known for its salt flats and rich history, Bolivia happens to be home to quite a few. Here are three scary attractions that you shouldn’t miss in this South American country.

Train Cemetery

Several cemeteries around the world became popular with tourists thanks to their beautiful architecture, but this one has a different claim to fame. This spot in Salar de Uyuni is home to rusty trains that have been around since the 19th century, and the legend has it they were once robbed by Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

North Yungas Road

At the first glance, the North Yungas Road seems like a pretty scenic attraction, but it made our list for a reason. The road between La Paz and the Yungas region is one of the world’s most dangerous routes and it earned itself the nickname “Death Road” over the years, so you should think twice before going there.

The Witches’ Market

Most travelers start their trip through Bolivia from its capital La Paz, and the Witches’ Market is one of its most popular attractions—despite being really spooky. Local “witch doctors” sell some pretty quirky items at this market, ranging from folk remedies and potions to such oddities as llama fetuses, dried frogs, and armadillos.

Most people have never heard of the Bolivian city of Sucre, and that’s their loss. Sucre is actually technically the capital of Bolivia, though the city of La Paz holds a lot of governmental power as well. Sucre has been an incredibly influential city for over 10,000 years when it was inhabited by the indigenous people, followed by the Incas in the 15th century and then finally the Spanish who colonized it shortly after. Sucre is also referred to as the White City because of all the white colonial buildings the Spanish built.

There are many great sites to see in this city, including the Plaza 25 de Mayo which is the main square of the city. Not only is it the main meeting place in the city, but it’s also home to famous buildings like the Cathedral and Casa de La Libertad. Go inside the 16th-century cathedral and see the beautiful artwork and check out the Casa de La Libertad where Bolivia first got its independence from Spain.

When you go to the plaza, you’ll see all sorts of people and vendors, and you might even catch a little theatrical performance if you’re lucky! Don’t miss out on the food vendors you’ll see in the plaza because they sell some super delicious bites.

Even if you’re only visiting Bolivia to explore its nature, it’s highly likely you’ll start your journey from its capital of La Paz. This city is worth sticking around in for a few days, especially if you love museums since it happens to be home to several pretty unusual spots.

Museum of Musical Instruments

If you love music and museums in equal measure, this spot will be your cup of tea. It features two floors filled with an impressive collection of musical instruments. Some of them can’t be found anywhere but here, including volcanic rock flutes and armadillo guitars.

Museum of Bolivian Andean Textiles

Bolivian textiles are really a sight to behold and you should consider bringing them home as a souvenir if you have a chance. If not, you should take some time to explore their rich history at the Museum of Bolivian Andean Textiles.

Museo de la Coca

One of the most strangely specific museums in La Paz is dedicated to the coca plant. This plant is native to the Andean region, and this museum explores its history and many uses, including the use of coca leaf extract for the production of Coca-Cola.

Bolivia is home to more natural wonders than we can count, but some of them don’t come in the shape of salt flats, snow-capped mountains, and shallow saline lakes. This country’s valleys are home to some of the most unusual rock formations you’ll ever see, and these three are worth the trip.

Valle de la Luna

Not to be confused with the Chilean tourist attraction of the same name, Bolivia’s Moon Valley is located in close proximity to La Paz. Centuries of erosion transformed this valley into a true natural wonder and its clay and sandstone spires are a sight to behold.

Valle de las Animas

Bolivia’s Valley of the Souls bears many similarities to the previous valley, and it’s also located near La Paz. This dramatic valley is best known for its needle-like rock formations, and it got its name becuase the first visitors felt like they look like petrified spirits and make wailing sounds when it’s windy in the area.

Palca Canyon

If you’re planning a road trip from La Paz that includes the two previous valleys, you should also add Palca Canyon to the mix. Its imposing rock towers will take your breath away, and so will the surrounding landscape with a glimpse of the Illimani Mountains.

El Alto is the second-largest city in Bolivia, but we don’t blame you if you’ve never heard of it before. Tourists and architecture lovers started falling in love with this city only recently, after discovering that the architect Freddy Mamani gave its streets a colorful transformation.

Before Mamani decided to give El Alto a total makeover, this city was best known as the highest major metropolis in the world, with an average elevation of 4,000 meters. Its streets looked quite bleak before this artist came into the picture and turned the city into the vibrant oasis it is today.

The type of buildings that started popping up all over El Alto thanks to Mamani is known as “cholets”. They draw inspiration from indigenous folklore and are mostly built in the Neo-Andean architectural style, giving us some major Wes Anderson vibes due to their colorful façades and quirky look.

Mamani’s buildings often feature three floors, dedicated to different kinds of activities, from commercial to residential. El Alto is currently home to over 70 buildings that he designed, and they have been credited to significantly boosting the tourism industry in this Bolivian city.
