To the west of the Caribbean Sea, tucked away between Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras, is a little country with a rich history and exquisite beaches. From the Mayans to the British, with a lot of Latin flavor mixed in, here are some reasons to visit Belize.

Mayan Ruins

The Mayan civilization thrived in Belize for 1,500 years. Throughout the country, you can find remains of their agriculture, workmanship, and architecture. Caracol is the largest archeological site and can be found within a tropical rain forest. It hosts the largest man-made structure in Belize, known as the Sky Palace. Another impressive monument worth checking out is The Castle in Xunantunich; and if you prefer your ruins in skeleton form, don’t miss the cave of Actun Tunichil Muknal.

Belize Barrier Reef

Belize is home to the second-largest coral reef in the world after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. Declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, snorkelers and scuba divers have 190 miles to explore, making it Belize’s top tourist spot. But if diving isn’t your thing, exquisite beaches can be found in Caye Caulker, Tobacco Caye, and Hopkins.

Culture

Both Latinos and Caribbean people know how to have a good time, and that is exactly the situation in Belize. With so many demographics, expect dishes like tamales and ceviche, as well as rice and beans and esabeche. Reggaeton, calypso, and punta music are the sounds on the street, so go ahead and paint the town red!

Caribbean sea shorelines, dense jungles, caves, marine life—what more could you possibly need? We’re talking about Belize. The Central American country is full of diverse natural beauty, rich history, and unique culture. While the country doesn’t get nearly as much attention as its Mexican neighbors Cancun, Cozumel, and Tulum, the countries Mayan ruins, snorkeling and scuba diving havens, and laid-back vibe, draw in tons of visitors a year. Here’s everything you need to know about exploring the coastal country.

Best Time to Visit

September and October are the offseason and besides for being rainy, some places are closed.

What to Do

Ambergris Caye

This 25-mile-long island off the coast of northern Belize has tons of outdoor activities, especially snorkeling and diving. Originally inhabited by the Mayans, today it has access to the barrier reef that surrounds the island. Snorkels and divers will want to explore Hol Chan Marine Reserve.

Great Blue Hole

This UNESCO World Heritage Site has ancient stalactites. The Great Blue Hole, created about 10,000 years ago after a cave roof crumbles in, is one of the world’s best scuba sites. The blue channel has underwater tunnels, caverns, and rock formations.

Cayo District

West of Belize City, Cayo District has a cluster of ancient Mayan sites, picturesque sunsets, butterfly gardens, jungles, and rolling hills. There’s also San Igancio, a small town that has delicious traditional culinary dishes.

What to Eat

Ceviche

Found all over Mexico, Belizean ceviche is different. Belizean ceviche is made with raw conch and shrimp and it’s less sweet and less fish-based than the Mexican one.

Tamales (Bollos)

Wrapped in plantain leaves instead of corn husks like the Mexican ones are the Belizean ones are made with seasoned chicken or pork wrapped in corn dough and then steamed in plantain or banana leaves.

The coast of Belize is home to the world’s largest sinkhole. The Great Blue Hole is one of the world’s most popular natural destinations and seeing the hole in real life is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. If you are planning on taking a trip to the Blue Hole, you will need to take a boat ride from the mainland and onto one of the islands. The Lighthouse Reef is particularly popular and offers many activities in addition to providing a look at the Blue Hole.

If you want to fully experience the Blue Hole, the best way to do so is by booking a scuba diving experience. In addition to getting a glimpse of the world’s largest sinkhole, you will encounter all kinds of marine life including nurse sharks, reef sharks, and blacktip sharks.

If swimming with sharks isn’t really your thing and you’d rather see the Blue Hole from above, you can book a helicopter tour from one of the surrounding islands. You can expect to fork out around $1000 for the experience but it will be an experience you will never forget.

You may have never heard of Belize and its beauty. Well, you have missed a lot, but better late than never! This former British colony is located in Central America, near the Mexican border, in the heart of the Caribbean basin. Belize, with its beautiful resorts, forests, beaches and great historical sights is slowly climbing on the scale as one of the greatest places to visit. These are the top places to see while staying in former British Honduras.

Mayan Ruins

Dozens of Mayan cities can be found on the territory of Belize. The decades-old excavations of pyramids and other ruins prove that Belize once was the center of the Mayan civilization. The two most known are the Caracol Ruins, the largest Mayan ruin located in the heart of the Chiquibul Forest, and Xunantunich, the most restored Mayan ruin.

Dangriga And The Hopkins Village

The best way to truly feel the soul of one nation is to bond with the locals. It can be fun and you will learn a lot. At Dangriga, which is the home to the Belizean Garifuna, the descendants of shipwrecked slaves and native Caribs, you can hear African music, see religious traditions, or even learn to drum. In Hopkins village, where the world’s second largest barrier reef can be found, you shouldn’t leave home without going on a memorable snorkeling adventure.
