A perhaps under-visited country in the Balkans of Europe, Serbia offers travelers an enticing blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. From vibrant cities to serene countryside, here are three reasons to make Serbia your next travel destination.

Rich Cultural Heritage

Serbia boasts a rich cultural heritage shaped by centuries of diverse influences. Explore the medieval monasteries of Studenica and Sopocani, marvel at the Ottoman architecture of Novi Pazar, or wander through the charming streets of Belgrade, the dynamic capital city. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience traditional Serbian cuisine, renowned for its hearty flavors and distinctive specialties like cevapi (grilled minced meat) and ajvar (a savory pepper-based condiment). Throughout the country, you’ll encounter warm hospitality and a deep appreciation for tradition.

Stunning Natural Landscapes

Serbia’s landscapes offer a paradise for nature enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers alike. Discover the rugged beauty of the Tara National Park, home to the dramatic Drina River Gorge and dense forests teeming with wildlife. Hike through the picturesque Fruska Gora National Park, dotted with ancient monasteries and vineyards producing world-class wines. For a unique experience, visit the surreal landscapes of the Djavolja Varos (Devil’s Town), characterized by peculiar rock formations sculpted by centuries of erosion.

Fascinating History and Heritage

Delve into Serbia’s fascinating history, and find yourself at the medieval fortress of Kalemegdan overlooking the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, witness remnants of the Roman Empire at Felix Romuliana, or pay homage to the victims of war at the poignant memorial sites of Srebrenica and Jasenovac. Most people coming to Belgrade are there to explore its nightlife and cultural scene, but the city’s architecture is also pretty stunning. The Serbian capital is home to some breathtaking religious buildings, and here are three you shouldn’t miss while exploring this city.

Saint Sava Temple

Built in the name of the founder of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Saint Sava Temple is one of Belgrade’s most recognizable landmarks. It’s been around since 2004, and its Byzantine-inspired architecture and imposing dome are reminiscent of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. This temple will also take your breath away with its size since it’s one of the world’s largest Eastern Orthodox churches.

St. Mark’s Church

Located in close proximity to the Parliament of Serbia, this Serbo-Byzantine church was completed in 1940 and it’s instantly recognizable thanks to its red brick walls and the imposing bell tower.

Ruzica Church

Belgrade Fortress is one of the top tourist attractions in the capital of Serbia, and it will rock your world with its rich history, natural beauty, and amazing views. You can spend hours exploring its secrets, but it’s important to pay extra close attention so you wouldn’t miss these three gems.

Ružica Church

One of the most Instagram-friendly locations you’ll stumble upon while exploring Belgrade Fortress is this tiny Orthodox church with the ivy-covered façade. It’s a popular wedding venue, also known for its unusual chandeliers made from bullet casings, swords, and cannon parts.

Roman Well

Despite what its name suggests, this well that inspired many myths and legends is not actually of Roman origin, and it’s not even a classic water well. It’s most likely that the Austrians built it to provide water for the army in the 18th century, but their efforts have proven to be futile and the “well” was later used as a dungeon.

Military Museum

If you notice many tanks, howitzers, and armored cars while exploring the Belgrade Fortress, keep on looking. They’re just a part of the outer exhibition of Belgrade’s Military Museum, and you can explore the rest of its impressive collection with over 3,000 items if you step indoors.

One of the best things about visiting Serbia is getting to taste all the delicious dishes this country has in store. Belgrade is home to many restaurants in which you can explore the richness of Balkan cuisine, but none of them compares to Manufaktura.

This popular tourist spot is located in the very heart of the Serbian capital and it prides itself on serving the most authentic Balkan foods and drinks in the entire city. Their rich menu offers a wide range of dried delicatessen meat, organically grown fruits and vegetables, and cheeses from various parts of Serbia.

Breakfast options and main dishes on their menu are all-time Serbian favorites, but they also offer several tasty delicacies you can’t find anywhere else. The wines at this restaurant are also top of the line since they work closely with small family-owned distilleries across Serbia.

Food isn’t the only reason to visit Manufaktura – the red umbrellas in the front transformed it into one of Belgrade’s most Instagrammable spots and its interior is equally impressive. The walls of this restaurant are lined with some of the most popular food products from the Balkan region that you can buy and take back home.

Serbia is one of the less visited countries in Europe. This is a shame as its capital city is vastly interesting and its history is fascinating. Here are five museums to convince knowledge seekers to stop by Belgrade on their European travels.

Nikola Tesla Museum

The man responsible for many of the significant technological advancements of the 20th century was born in Serbia. The museum honors the huge contributions Tesla made to life as we know it and contains artifacts and videos to teach visitors about his unique life and work.

Museum of Science and Technology

Even if you typically skip the science museum, it is worth stopping by this intriguing spot in Serbia. The room of illusions is a whole lot of fun and there are tonnes of interactive exhibitions.

Ethnographic Museum

The ethnographic museum honors the lives of the Serbian people over the centuries.

Museum of Yugoslavia

The Museum of Yugoslavia is arguably the most impressive museum in Belgrade. It tells the story of Yugoslavia in the most honest and respectful way and features many vastly interesting exhibitions.

Serbia’s history is notoriously complex and the Historical Museum does its best to explain the country’s history in the most sincere way possible.
