Hiking can be a great addition to any vacation itinerary, but what about when the purpose of the trip is the hike itself? For athletic and adventurous travelers alike, long-distance trails offer a unique opportunity for exploration and disconnection from the stressors of everyday life. While it’s true that long-distance hikes are likely to include plenty of obstacles of their own, they can also be incredibly rewarding. If you’re a distance hiker looking for your next challenge, read on to learn more about some of the world’s best trails.

The Appalachian Trail

It turns out the notorious computer game we all loved as kids is named after a real-life long-distance trail in the Eastern United States. Spanning approximately 2,190 miles, the Appalachian Trail offers hikers the opportunity to explore a diverse range of ecosystems as they move from the forests of the South to the rocky terrain of New England. This trail is both challenging and highly rewarding, taking most hikers between 5 to 7 months to complete.

Annapurna Circuit

For those in search of a bit more elevation, the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal stands out as a picturesque journey through some of the world’s highest peaks. At a height of 33,159 ft and a length of 145 miles, the trail circumnavigates the Annapurna Massif in the Himalayas, offering hikers postcard-worthy views of alpine landscapes and traditional villages along the way. On average, the trail takes about 2-3 weeks to complete depending on skill level and the specific route travelers choose to take.

Te Araroa Trail

Literally translated as “The Long Path”, New Zealand’s Te Araroa Trail offers adventure enthusiasts the chance to take in a diverse array of the country’s natural wonders through one 1,800-mile trek. The trail was officially opened in 2011 and consists of a series of tracks and walkways that connect New Zealand’s North and South Islands. Most hikers will require about 4-5 months to complete the trail, with October to November recommended as the best times to start.

One of the best ways to improve your travel experience (and life) is to make changes in your daily routine and take certain risks. Stepping out of your comfort zone and doing something new while in a foreign country can be scary, but also very rewarding. Here are three risks you should take to improve your travels.

Embark On a Solo Travel

Traveling the world on your own probably sounds like a scary and risky idea but it’s also a unique experience that every avid traveler should try. Traveling alone is not easy, but it’s definitely a great way to boost your self-confidence and travel more often.

Meet The Locals

Even if you’re not used to talking to “strangers”, meeting new people is an excellent way to enrich your travel experience and life. Traveling is a unique opportunity to meet people from all over the world and maybe even make new friends.

Get Lost

Most travelers like to plan ahead every single detail of their trip because this makes us feel safe and in control while in a foreign country. But sometimes the best thing you can do is to leave your planner and map in the room, go outside and see where the road takes you.

Do you have a fear of heights? Well, Portugal’s newest spot for thrill-seeking adventurers might not be for you!

516 Arouca is set to open this fall as the world’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge, and it’s easy to see why it will take some guts to cross it.

Hanging 575 feet above the ravine which hosts Paiva River at the bottom of it, this new bridge is held by only two concrete V-shaped towers on either side of the ravine. This means that the footpath sways and rocks with the wind and with the motion of people crossing it!

Measuring at 1,692 feet long, depending on how scared you are, it will take about five to 10 minutes to cross in its entirety.

Part of the Arouca Geopark, a paradise for nature lovers in Portugal’s north-central Aveiro district, you’ll be able to see panoramic views of the Paiva River, the mountainous terrain, and the Aguieiras Waterfall if you’re brave enough to look anywhere but forward as you cross!

The COVID-19 pandemic has delayed its opening, but the new bridge is all tested and ready and set to open before Christmas this year!

A 12 euro admission ticket will grant you access to the bridge as well as the Passadiços do Paiva hiking route in the park. If you find yourself in Portugal and looking for a thrill, this unique attraction is a must-visit.

If you are missing a touch of horror movie adventure in your life, we give you some of the most mysterious and scary places you can visit:

Catacombs, Capuchin, Italy

Here you can see more than 8,000 skulls older than a few centuries. You can visit them every day except on Sunday. The place is just as spooky as it sounds, but if you would like the experience of dead skulls looking at you from all sides, you are welcome to visit them.

Haw Par Villa, Singapore

This theme park uses folklore and old traditions to teach children morals.  The sculptures tell stories of what will happen to children if they lie or disobey their parents. Although the entrance is free, neither the children nor the parents choose this park as their leisurely Sunday activity.

Christ of the Abyss

In 1954 Italian diver, Duilio Marchante lost his friend Dario in a diving accident and decided to put a statue of Jesus on the exact place where he died. Underwater. Located in the Mediterranean Sea, off San Fruttuoso, between Camogli and Portofino on the Italian Riviera, the statue is 2.5 meters high and 17 meters under the water. If you are brave enough to go and see it, it will give you the most unique and exciting feeling – a mix of terror and awe!

Swildon’s Hole, Somerset

Located in the infamous caving district of the Mendips, here you can find the largest subterranean river network in Britain with a whole city of caves and crevices to explore.
