Located in the West Midlands region of England is a small town of just under 30,000 that has a very special secret.

Stratford-upon-Avon, an otherwise unassuming market town located a short distance from the big cities of Birmingham and London, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in England. Why is this?

Well, the most famous writer in the history of the English language, William Shakespeare, was born and raised in this town.

Tourists that visit Stratford-upon-Avon can explore landmarks related to the legendary writer’s life and childhood.

The most important monument for any Shakespeare fanatic that visits Stratford-upon-Avon is his birthplace. Shakespeare’s Birthplace, as the house is called, is a restored 16th century home located on Henley Street in the center of the city. It is the house in which The Bard was born and raised, and visitors can explore the house, as well as its memorabilia and exhibitions related to the writer.

In addition, visitors can see Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, which is the small house in which Shakespeare’s wife’s family resided and lived.

Finally, visitors to this town can visit the Church of the Holy Trinity, a beautiful building which dates back to the 13th century. Located here is Shakespeare’s grave, as well as baptism and birth records which belonged to the writer.

If you love Shakespeare, put Stratford-upon-Avon at the top of your travel list!
