If you ever visit a region like Napa Valley in California, the Cape Winelands in South Africa, Bordeaux in France, or Tuscany in Italy, you’ll probably want to visit some wineries. And when you visit a winery, an obvious (and very fun!) thing to do is a wine tasting, which is when you, well, taste some of the wines made at the winery.

However, wine tastings can be a little bit intimidating for some people, making you feel like you have to know some esoteric wine information or wine tasting procedures that nobody ever officially taught you. So we’re here to teach you—even though wine tastings are much lower pressure situations than you might think.

First, here’s what you can expect from a wine tasting. It may or may not begin with a tour of the winery grounds. Eventually, you’ll go to a tasting room where a sommelier will take you through a prepared wine tasting menu. You’ll get a glass with a small serving of each wine, some information about it, the opportunity to ask questions, and then you’ll get to taste it. Sometimes there might be bread or cheese. And that’s all!

Now what about tasting itself? You don’t have to do or say anything fancy. If you really want to get into it, give your wine a look and a sniff before swirling it, tasting it, and describing what you think. If you hate it, you don’t have to finish your glass. If you like it, go ahead! It’s all up to you.

When it comes to the ideal vacation, a good meal can make or break your entire experience. But balancing your meal with a nice glass of wine can be equally important. Wine and travel blogger Penny Sadler knows best. A student of the Wine and Spirits Education Trust (an internationally recognized certification), Sadler has traveled to some of the world’s most interesting wine regions and shares her experiences with her followers on her online blog, Adventures of a Carry-On.

“Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or find it not,” Sadler quotes Ralph Waldo Emerson, explaining the origins of her blog’s name. Indeed, when it comes to traveling, Sadler admits to having a bad case of wanderlust.

Like most travel bloggers, Sadler caught the travel bug fairly on, though she admits she didn’t come from a family that encouraged traveling. “My family didn’t really travel, other than to move from California to Texas and back several times,” she explained in a piece published on Wander With Wonder.

She then added that she probably got hooked on travel in grade school geography class. “I recall reading about places like Pompeii and the Black Forest. An entire city covered by a lava flow sounded like the coolest thing ever to me. I’m pretty sure my wanderlust was born in the classroom.”

According to Sadler, blogging came quite naturally to her as she’s always kept a journal, but the best part of being a travel writer is connecting with other people. “The best part of being a travel writer is the people I meet,” she notes. “My biggest challenge is staying focused on the task at hand; I’m very curious and easily distracted by sparkly things.”

A professional makeup artist, Sadler supports her travels by writing part-time and continuing her career. In addition, she hosts wine tastings for both private and retail customers. Her blog includes first-hand accounts (anything from picking grapes in Barolo to exploring the Grand Cru vineyards of Alsace), alongside intimate details of tours, wineries, restaurants, and hotels.

Wine lovers probably think about most of the usual suspects when choosing locations for wine-based vacations: Tuscany, Argentina, and Spain are some that come to mind.

However, did you know that there is an almost undiscovered and completely underrated wine region in South Africa that you have probably never heard of before?

The Western Cape region of South Africa is the home to a vast number of vineyards in scenic settings that produce high-quality wines.

While South Africa is generally a very warm country, the relatively high latitudes of the southwesternmost part of the country and the cooling breezes of the Atlantic Ocean create an ideal place to cultivate grapes.

The number of wineries and producers has grown exponentially since the first wine estate in the territory, Groot Constantia, was founded in the 17th century by the Dutch just south of the city of Cape Town.

These days, you will find a number of subregions in the province whose wineries have found the formula for producing a variety of wines, both red and white.

So, the next time you are looking to plan a wine-centric vacation, why not consider a trip to this part of South Africa to see all the fantastic options there are to check out?

Perhaps not the first thought one has when planning a trip to New Zealand, including a vineyard and winery tour when visiting the Southen Hemisphere destination can be a great upgrade of your trip.

Here are a few spots for your wine tour:

Pegasus Bay

A family-owned vineyard in the South Island Canterbury’s Waipara Valley, Pegasus Bay has been active for about 30 years, and now features a tasting room and an award-winning restaurant alongside a shop selling their products. They are particularly renowned for their Rieslings, Pinot Noirs, and Chardonnays.

Neudorf Vineyard

Half an hour’s drive from Nelson, Neudorf is open for visitors seven days a week with their tasting room, shop, and deli providing their fresh products to enjoy on-site or buy for a later time. The Neudorf Moutere wines are all organic or converting to be, and their selection prides itself on its seasonality.

Leave the tool box to one side & simply let the wine “be.” . Sense of place in the wine glass… is important to New Zealanders. Do YOU know what this means when it comes to winemaking?? . Great wines have a basis of fruit concentration, length and sense of place – characters which can be formed only in the vineyard . Let's chat about my visit to @neudorfvineyards in Nelson, New Zealand. A winery that truly understands the concept of 'place' shining through in the glass itself. . It’s all about place. And this place is special. @winenelson . From their choice of organic certification, to increased biodiversity in the vineyard, at Neudorf they care about the land and the grapes that grow here… not to mention the lovely wines they create from this piece of land Winemaker Todd Stevens heads up this vine to bottle approach & his role is to draw the various strands together to craft wines of distinction, wines that express their sense of place. . He explains…. “We have an exceptional site here at Neudorf and it demands little from us in the winery. If we can guide grapes into wine of integrity, without buggering it up, we are content” . Our group had the pleasure of hanging with Todd for the day, toured around, tasted & learned more about the history of Nelson & the people who first started growing grapes there. We even had a fabulous visit to the oldest pub in New Zealand. . Again, the hospitality of the people is apparent. He even returned the next day to a museum we were visiting to return one of my phones I left in his car. How sweet. @nzwinegrowers @purenewzealand . . … #SipOnThisJuice#NewZealand#NZ#NZTravel#luxurytravel #ilovemylife #winenelson #SipNZ #instanewzealand #pinotcentral#nzmustdo#purenewzealand#brillianteveryday#sommit#amylieberfarb#wine#vineyards #vineyard #chardonnay#nzwine#sauvignonnz#sauvignonblanc#purenz#winelover#gooutside#winetasting#winemaker#neudorf#neudorfvineyards#winery

Chile has some world-famous wines, and it’s always fun to see how everything gets made and to taste the best of the best. So if you’re ever visiting, you have every reason to step outside and go to some wineries that make your favorite types of wine!

Concha y Toro

Concha y Toro is the largest producer of wine in Latin America, so you know you have to go see it. Created in 1883, the winery is just an hour outside of Santiago, and they have all sorts of specialties in both red and white wines. They’re famous for their Castillero de Diablo, and you’ll see why once you go!

Viña Cousiño Macul

This winery is in fact, the oldest winery in all of Chile. Viña Cousiño Macul
was established back in 1872, and are now are on the sixth generation of winemakers. The winery is only a 30-minute drive from Santiago, and the grounds are large and luscious.

Casa Silva

If you’re looking to go to a winery that provides much more, like boutique hotel accommodations and fine dining, Casa Silva is for you. This vineyard doesn’t just give guests a taste of the good stuff, it really provides you with a complete experience.
