Wellington is a fantastic city on the Southern Tip of the North Island of New Zealand. The city has a flourishing nightlife as well as being a cultural hub of New Zealand. Here are three reasons why you should visit Wellington.

Mount Victoria

Mount Victoria is a significant hill not far from the coast in Wellington city center. It climbs over 600 feet above sea level and offers amazing views over the city of Wellington once you reach the summit. It was also used to film scenes in Lord of the Rings and offers mountain biking trails for the adventurous.

Te Papa

Te Papa is the National Museum of New Zealand and offers some incredible exhibitions that are well worth a visit. With almost 2 million yearly visitors, it is one of the most popular museums in New Zealand and has a lot to offer for everyone.

The Atmosphere

Wellington has a great nightlife and, on the right night, it has a raucous and festival-like atmosphere. Cuba Street has many independent bars and cafes which are worth stopping at. Sometimes referred to as ‘Wellywood’, Wellington is reminiscent of San Francisco with its trams, steep hills, stunning coastline, and thriving cultural scene.

Queenstown

Speaking of natural wonders, it doesn’t get any better than Queenstown. Its convenient location on the shores of Lake Wakatipu makes it one of the most scenic places in New Zealand, and it’s extremely popular with fans of winter sports.

Christchurch

Christchurch isn’t getting as much attention as some other major cities in New Zealand, but it definitely deserves it. It’s home to some of the country’s most beautiful beaches, but it also happens to be popular with fans of winter sports. This city suffered a series of earthquakes in the early 2010s, but it’s being rebuilt into an amazing, vibrant place.

Wellington is the small capital of New Zealand that is such an adorable place it’s hard not to fall in love with it!

The city is located on the coast so you have plenty of water views and natural activities to do if that’s your cup of tea. If not, there are tons of cultural and historical sites and attractions that will teach you all about the history of this stunning island nation.

So if you’re looking for a different kind of vacations in a very relaxed country, you have to experience Wellington!

What to Do

Since Wellington is a coastal city, you have to check out the Wellington Waterfront. Along the water, you will see loads of cafes, restaurants, and shops, and it’s also just a nice place to talk a stroll. Also, this is the spot where a lot of cultural and municipal events happen, like Chinese New Year, fireworks and more!

One of the most famous attractions in Wellington is the Te Papa Tongarewa Museum, which is the New Zealand national museum that covers an array of topics. It’s an art, history, and science museum, with so many interactive and fascinating exhibits that it definitely cannot be missed. There you can also learn about the indigenous Maori people, which is a crucial part of being on colonized land.

If you want to learn more about the history of Wellington, the Wellington Museum has you covered! It’s located at the Wellington waterfront so you can stop in and learn more about the city in a beautiful 19th-century colonial building! Best, of all, admission is free.

Beach bums rejoice in Wellington where there are enough beaches to satisfy anyone’s need for relaxation. The closest beach to the downtown area is called Oriental Bay and it’s the perfect place to chill, swim, or just take a walk while the sun is setting!

One of the most unique places in Wellington is called Zealandia, an ecosanctuary. It’s part zoo part conservation site where not only animals are being protected but also natural waterways. There is no other places like Zealandia in the world, so you have to make it a priority!

What to Eat

A dessert named pavlova is actually the national dish of New Zealand, even though it’s also equally famous in Australia. Pavlova is a dish of meringue that’s topped with cream and fresh berries and it’s absolutely scrumptious. If you’re looking for the best place to get it in Wellington, Charley Noble is where you need to go. The pavlova there is traditional, but you just can’t go wrong with a classic.

Because of the location, it’s easy to find really out of this world seafood in Wellington. If that’s right up your alley, look no further than Ortega Fish Shack and Bar for all your seafood delights! The decor is slightly kitschy, but the food is seriously flavorful and completely fresh, you’ll be glad to have gone there.
