Wellington is the small capital of New Zealand that is such an adorable place it’s hard not to fall in love with it!

The city is located on the coast so you have plenty of water views and natural activities to do if that’s your cup of tea. If not, there are tons of cultural and historical sites and attractions that will teach you all about the history of this stunning island nation.

So if you’re looking for a different kind of vacations in a very relaxed country, you have to experience Wellington!

What to Do

Since Wellington is a coastal city, you have to check out the Wellington Waterfront. Along the water, you will see loads of cafes, restaurants, and shops, and it’s also just a nice place to talk a stroll. Also, this is the spot where a lot of cultural and municipal events happen, like Chinese New Year, fireworks and more!

One of the most famous attractions in Wellington is the Te Papa Tongarewa Museum, which is the New Zealand national museum that covers an array of topics. It’s an art, history, and science museum, with so many interactive and fascinating exhibits that it definitely cannot be missed. There you can also learn about the indigenous Maori people, which is a crucial part of being on colonized land.

If you want to learn more about the history of Wellington, the Wellington Museum has you covered! It’s located at the Wellington waterfront so you can stop in and learn more about the city in a beautiful 19th-century colonial building! Best, of all, admission is free.

Beach bums rejoice in Wellington where there are enough beaches to satisfy anyone’s need for relaxation. The closest beach to the downtown area is called Oriental Bay and it’s the perfect place to chill, swim, or just take a walk while the sun is setting!

One of the most unique places in Wellington is called Zealandia, an ecosanctuary. It’s part zoo part conservation site where not only animals are being protected but also natural waterways. There is no other places like Zealandia in the world, so you have to make it a priority!

What to Eat

A dessert named pavlova is actually the national dish of New Zealand, even though it’s also equally famous in Australia. Pavlova is a dish of meringue that’s topped with cream and fresh berries and it’s absolutely scrumptious. If you’re looking for the best place to get it in Wellington, Charley Noble is where you need to go. The pavlova there is traditional, but you just can’t go wrong with a classic.

Because of the location, it’s easy to find really out of this world seafood in Wellington. If that’s right up your alley, look no further than Ortega Fish Shack and Bar for all your seafood delights! The decor is slightly kitschy, but the food is seriously flavorful and completely fresh, you’ll be glad to have gone there.

Cities have lots of wonderful things to offer but sometimes, it’s nice to escape the hustle and bustle and take a breather. Here are some of our favorite spots to take a stroll and unwind in Wellington, New Zealand’s thriving capital.

Mount Victoria

Mount Victoria is the perfect place to take a hike and be rewarded with incredible views of the city. If its mountain looks familiar, it might be because it is the parkland where Frodo ran into the Black Riders in The Fellowship of the Ring.

The Weta Cave

Even if you are not a Lord of the Rings fan, Weta Cave is an essential spot on for your Wellington experience. Search for trolls in the gardens and learn about the process of creating the legendary franchise.

Wellington Writers Walk

Taking a stroll in the hope of receiving creative inspiration? Head down to Writers Walk.

I love this city, the hills, the harbour the wind that blasts through it. I love the life and pulse and activity, and the warm decrepitude…there’s always an edge here that one must walk which is sharp and precarious, requiring vigilance. Patricia Grace, Cousins (1992) Wellington Writers Walk takes visitors on an arts discovery tour of Wellington’s famed waterfront pedestrian precinct. The 15 text sculptures – created by artist Catherine Griffiths – feature quotes about the city by well known New Zealand writers with strong Wellington connections. Patricia Grace is a major New Zealand novelist, short story writer and children’s writer. She is of Ngati Toa, Ngati Raukawa and Te Ati Awa descent, and is affiliated to Ngati Porou by marriage. Shehas since won many national and international awards, including the Kiriyama Pacific Rim Book Prize for fiction, the Deutz Medal for Fiction, and the Neustadt International Prize for Literature (widely considered the most prestigious literary prize after the Nobel). A deeply subtle, moving and subversive writer, Grace received in 2007 a Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to literature • • • • • #newzealand #nz #nzmustdo #destinationnz #purenewzealand #wellington #capturenz #newzealandfinds #newzealandguide #kiwipics #newzealandvacations #sharemewlg #kiwi_photos #wellingtonnz #wellingtonlive #purenz #realmiddleearth #discover_newzealand #ig_newzealand #gottalovenz #bestnewzealand #aotearoa #queenstown #kiwi #newzealandphotography #northisland . #wellingtonwriterswalk #wellingtonnz🇳🇿
