The history of the fight for civil rights in the United States is one of the most fascinating parts of its history. The 19th and 20th centuries were largely marked by social movements pleading for more rights for African-Americans, a fight which largely continues to this day.

The capital city of Washington, DC was in large part the home of these struggles and hosts a number of sites that anyone in this history should check out. Here are three to add to your list.

Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial

Inaugurated in 2011 after two decades of planning, fundraising, and construction work, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial is located next to the National Mall. A gorgeous sculpture made of white granite, it captures the essence of King’s serenity, steadfastness, and grace.

The National Museum of African American History and Culture

Another recent addition to Washington, DC is the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Here, in addition to other artifacts and exhibitions commemorating achievements of the black community, you will find a large part of it dedicated to the community’s struggle for equality.

Frederick Douglass National Historic Site

Frederick Douglass was one of the early founders of the Civil Rights movement, emerging as a key figure in the fight for emancipation in the 1800s. You can visit his 19th century home and estate and discover his fight for equal rights.

Washington, DC is a city which is famed for having a huge number of monuments and memorials dedicated to the history of the United States. While some, like the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, are highly visited, others aren’t as well known even though they’re also worth a stop.

Here are some underrated DC monuments that you should take the time to check out.

The leader of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s in the United States, Martin Luther King, Jr.’s memorial is one of the newest in DC and one of its most strikingly beautiful. Washington, DC, which is the capital of the United States and home of the most important government buildings and memorials in the country, is a paradise for tourists who are interested in the history of the U.S.

Visitors to the District of Columbia will find a wide range of things to do, but they should ensure that they spend some time exploring the city’s numerous monuments. Here are the top three that you should definitely put on your list.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial

The Vietnam War is one of the darkest chapters of American history, in which nearly 60,000 troops lost their lives in the armed conflict. The sobering Vietnam Veterans Memorial is a black wall containing the names of every soldier that lost their lives in the conflict and one of the most striking monuments on Earth.

Lincoln Memorial

The 16th president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, is one of the most revered figures in the history of the country. His namesake memorial in the heart of Washington features a marble building containing a larger-than-life statue of a seated Lincoln, who was larger than life himself.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial

Civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. got his own memorial in the nation’s capital in 2011, commemorating one of the people who led the push towards greater rights for black Americans. While it’s relatively new, this powerful tribute to King is a place that you should not skip.

Washington Metro

The United States’ capital, despite not being one of the nation’s largest cities, has an enviable Metro system with an iconic and recognizable station design that jumps out due to its vaulted ceilings. Not only does this Metro cover DC, but it also covers suburban areas in Maryland and Virginia.

BART (San Francisco)

Another metro station that gives you the option of staying in more affordable accommodation in the suburban areas outside of the city center is BART, which covers the San Francisco Metro Area. Its combined system of under and over-ground rail connects nearly all the Bay Area’s population to San Fran.

Have you ever wanted to visit one of the most famous residences in the world, the White House? The official home of the President of the United States of America is one of the most well-known houses on Earth, and believe it or not, it can be toured for free!

If you want to take a tour of the White House, there are some important steps to follow. All tours must be requested and booked in advance due to high demand, so keep that in mind.

First, if you are a United States citizen, you must request a tour no more than 90 days and no less than 3 weeks before the requested date. This process is done through your local House of Representatives’ office holder.

If you aren’t a citizen, you must contact your country’s embassy in Washington, DC in order to inquire about the possibility of a tour. Usually, it is more difficult for foreigners to tour the White House, but it isn’t impossible.

The White House is only open for tours from Tuesday through Saturday and is closed on federal holidays. From Tuesday to Thursday, the tours take place from 7:30 am to 11:30 am, and on Fridays and Saturdays, they last until 12:30 pm after starting at the same time.

When requesting your tour, be sure to know which dates you have available for touring the White House, and do it as soon as possible! Availability is limited, so the closer to the 90-day opening you request your tour, the more likely it is that you’ll be able to visit.

Good luck, and enjoy!

Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the 32nd president of the United States and one of its most revered after leading the country out of the Great Depression and through World War II. He has a humble monument in West Potomac Park where he is memorialized along with his dog, Fala.

Albert Einstein Memorial

Albert Einstein, the world-famous scientist who developed the Theory of Relativity, spent most of his later life in the United States. He has a 12-foot bronze statue just a couple of minutes away from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial where he can be seen looking over manuscript papers.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial
