Now that you’ve chosen a destination, bought your tickets, and packed your bags, it’s time to think about the details of your vacation, like how much cash you need to bring. With credit cards and payment apps becoming the popular mode of payment, do you even need to bring cash? Well, yes. Here’s how to figure out how much cash you need to bring.

Research the Destination

While paying with debit and credit cards at restaurants is second nature in the U.S., it’s not always an option abroad, especially at small, independent retailers which may add on unwanted service charges to purchases. Think about how accessible ATM machines are and if they charge commission fees and if tipping is customary.

Research Your Card of Bank

Look at your credit or debit card’s travel policies and if they offer travel perks or rewards. Some companies charge extra tax for purchases abroad. Perhaps save the card for emergency purposes.

Make a Budget

Budget around $50-$100 per person for each day of your vacation which will cover accommodation, food, drink, and transportation. Make sure you account for special purchases at markets and once-in-a-lifetime activities that may require cash.
