Utrecht is a small Dutch city with plenty on offer. If you’re passing through Utrecht, or only have limited time, check out this guide on how to spend 24 hours in this sublime Dutch city.

Morning: Grab A Coffee And Cake

Like most Europeans, Dutch people take their morning coffee quite seriously. Head to any of the traditional city center cafes and order a black coffee with a pastry for an authentic Dutch morning snack. Admire the dark panelled interiors, as many cafes have kept interior decor traditional, before strolling back onto the streets for your next stop.

Mid Morning: Canal Tour

You can either walk alongside the canals, admiring the water from above, or get up and close by taking a boat around the canals of Utretcht. This city is fairly laid back and not too busy, but even so gliding along the water can be a relaxing break from strolling the streets.

Afternoon: Church Visit

St Martin’s Cathedral is a stunning example of Gothic architecture, situated within the center of Utrecht. Construction started in 1254, so there is some serious history here. Inside, admire the grand scale, stunning artworks and peaceful atmosphere, whilst from the outside you can enjoy getting that perfect picture to remember Utrecht by.

Evening: Head To A Bar

Most of Utrecht’s trendiest bars are found canal-side, so walk along the water until you find a place you like the look of. Like most places in the Netherlands, ordering drinks in a bar also means a platter of small snacks being brought to the table, so you won’t go hungry.

Utrecht is a charming city, so if you’re travelling around the Netherlands, make sure you check it out – even in 24 hours, you can do a lot and see so much of the city!

Just a 30-minute train ride from Amsterdam lies the hidden gem of Utrecht. While it’s smaller and quieter than the Dutch capital it has plenty to offer. Here are a few of the cool things you can see in and do Utrecht.

Rietveld Schröder House

Designed by the famed architect Gerrit Rietveld and a socialite called Truus Schröder-Schräde in the 1920s, this house contains many ingenious design ideas. One of the main features is the adjustable walls that create additional space when moved. After Schröder-Schräder’s death in 1985, the house became a UNESCO Heritage Site.

De Haar Castle

This incredible neo-gothic castle is one of the most luxurious ones in Europe. The gardens and the park were designed by the architect Pierre Cuypers and they are as spectacular as the building itself.

Museum Speelklok

This fascinating museum in central Utrecht collects and preserves a large collection of self-playing instruments. Despite being centuries old, many of these artifacts continue to chime and ding away.

Sonnenborgh Observatory

Sonnenborgh Observatory allows visitors to explore the night sky with their high-powered telescopes. The facility, which was founded back in the 19th century by the University of Utrecht, also holds several specialized exhibitions.

Centraal Museum

Utrecht’s Centraal Museum is renowned for its rich Northern Renaissance collection, but it also holds many other groundbreaking artworks from the last 10 centuries.

Amsterdam is cool, but have you ever thought about other cities in the Netherlands you could visit? Here are three that we recommend.

Rotterdam

Rotterdam is becoming more and more popular among tourists. This harbor city is the second-largest in the country. Unlike Amsterdam, its medieval center wasn’t preserved until today due to heavy bombing that happened in the Second World War. Rotterdam has since risen from the ashes and is today a city where you can see the incredible contemporary architecture, great food courts, and a number of festivals.

Utrecht

Utrecht is located in the heart of the Netherlands, which makes it easily reachable from every part of the country. The city offers a cruise or kayak tour over the canals in the old center, a cycle tour to De Haar Castle, or a relaxing day downtown where you can find great restaurants, bars, and shops.

The Hague

The Hague is known as the political center of the country and it’s the place where all the ministries and a few royal residences are. However, the city is also interesting from a tourist point of view. The city’s Mauritshius museum holds paintings from Dutch masters like Rembrandt and Vermeer, and you can also take a walk through the country on a miniature scale located in Madurodam.
