Greece’s rich history and Mediterranean charm have earned it a top spot on many a bucket list, and rightfully so. There’s no denying that the country is home to plenty of archaeological wonders, postcard-worthy beaches, and world-class cuisine, but many of the best locations to enjoy what makes Greece special tend to be overlooked by the majority of travelers. Read on to learn more about some underrated small towns in Greece worth checking out.

Arachova

Arachova is a quaint town in the Parnassus Mountains and is an ideal spot to enjoy winter in Greece. Just two hours from Athens, the village is known for its breathtaking alpine scenery, which serves as a great backdrop for activities like skiing and hiking. After a day on the slopes, head into town to refuel with a traditional Greek meal before dancing the night away at a local nightclub.

Kastellorizo

Often overshadowed by its western Mediterranean counterparts, the Dodecanese is a group of Islands that, while technically part of Greece, is actually much closer to Türkiye. Smallest among them at just under 5 sq mi is Kastellorizo, a picturesque fishing village named for the medieval castle that sits on its port. Kastellorizo’s position in the Aegean Sea lends itself to a vibrant harbor and some of the best snorkeling in the region.

Nafpaktos

In the Gulf of Corinth, Nafpaktos sits quietly as a unique alternative to more popular tourist spots on the Greek mainland. The town’s harbor is lined with colorful buildings that overlook a medieval seafront fortress, and its pristine pebble beaches serve as a lovely space to relax and unwind. There’s even a botanical garden just 30 minutes outside Nafpaktos for those looking to spend some time in nature.
