Europe is the world’s most-visited continent, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t unknown countries in this group of diverse and beautiful nations. In fact, some countries are visited by fewer than 100,000 tourists per year!

If you are looking to add an under-the-radar European nation to your travel list, here are three great choices.

San Marino

San Marino, a micronation surrounded entirely by Italy, only has 33,400 residents and is visited by around 60,000 people per year. Mount Titano towers over the rest of the landscape, which is dotted with small towns and charming villages close to the Adriatic coast.

Liechtenstein

Do you love mountains? If so, it might be worth it for you to join the list of around 70,000 annual visitors to the microstate of Liechtenstein! This tiny country is nestled between Austria and Switzerland and is located entirely within the scenic boundary of the Alps and contains castles and alpine landscapes.

Moldova

Moldova has an unfair reputation of being drab and gloomy, something that is easily perceived when you see that only around 150,000 people enter its borders for tourism purposes annually. However, Moldova has a thriving wine scene, surviving relics of the Soviet Union, and a true old-world charm.

If you’re planning a European trip and are looking at the standard countries like Italy, France, or England, think about going to see these countries that are super underrated!

Romania

Romania has such a cool folklore history, as well as some super underrated cities! The nightlife and atmosphere of cities like Cluj and Bucharest are super hip and very cosmopolitan but at incredibly low prices.

Also, if you know any romance languages, you might be able to get by since Romanian is also a romance language-little known fact!

The Museum of the National Bank of Romania, in the old city center, is a real gem! One of Romania's greatest architects, Ion Mincu, has declared it "the most beautiful building in Bucharest" at the end of the 19th century.⠀⠀ .⠀⠀ The Old Palace (there are two buildings) was built between 1884-1890 in an eclectic style with some neo-classical elements.⠀⠀ .⠀⠀ Besides the impressive coin and money collections (with coins dating back from the Roman times), the new Gold exhibition (with gold coins, bars and even ore), and an original Nicolae Grigorescu painting (one of the greatest Romanian painters), you'll find here some truly amazing architecture!⠀⠀ .⠀⠀ You can visit the museum with free guided tours, also in English, from Mondays to Fridays, between 10:00 and 17:00. You have to book a tour in advance by sending an email, you can find more info if you search "muzeul bnr Admission and opening times".⠀⠀ #cronicaridigitali #patrimoniu #doepicshots #bankingasacumtrebuie #experienteimpreuna #corastiidecerevii⠀⠀ .⠀⠀ .⠀⠀ .⠀⠀ .⠀⠀ .⠀⠀ .⠀⠀ .⠀⠀ .⠀⠀ .⠀⠀ .⠀⠀ #ateneu #ateneulroman #bucuresti #bucharest #descoperabucurestiul #visitbucharest #creatorswillcreate #discoverbucharest #wearebucharest #bucharestjournal #romania #TopRomaniaPhoto #touristinromania⠀⠀ #promovezromania #romaniainspo #ig_romania #pemeleaguriromânești #theprettycities #welltravelled #Flashesofdelight #Wandeleurspark #thatsdarling⠀⠀ #pursuepretty #tlpicks

Bulgaria

Just south of Romania is another incredible country, Bulgaria. Bulgaria not only has natural beauty in its landscape, but the cities match as well. Bulgaria is also home to the oldest city in Europe and one of the oldest in the world called Plovdiv, so you can’t miss out on that for sure!

Poland

Poland is actually a central European country, much to people’s disbelief, and although it has a tainted history with its involvement in the Holocaust, it’s definitely worth visiting. While you’re there you should definitely see the concentration camps, but also take solace in the fact that the cities are super lively and bustling, so you can relax a bit.
