The Boston area is one of the more rustic metropolises of the United States, which means it has a thriving arts and culture scene. One great feature of this scene is the numerous small independent theatres around the area. If you love old films, experimental films, or indie films, then you’ll want to check out some of these theatres and their regular showings of films that you won’t see in large commercial theatres.

Brattle Theatre, Harvard Square

In Cambridge, right in the heart of Harvard Square, you’ll find the one-screen indie Brattle Theatre. This theatre is super cute and has double features of old movies every Sunday, regularly shows films from independent artists often with the makers of the films in attendance, and even hosts several-day film festivals such as the Women in Comedy Festival and the LGBT Film Festival.

Coolidge Corner Theatre, Brookline

Situated in an old church, the Coolidge Corner Theatre has been operating as a theatre since 1933. It also shows independent and older movies and has several smaller screening rooms in addition to its larger screen. Some of its rooms even have armchairs for a more comfortable, cozy experience!

Somerville Theatre, Davis Square

In Somerville’s bustling Davis Square is the over-100-year-old Somerville Theatre. This theatre hosted vaudeville and other live acts in its heyday, and now has several screens including a rentable one where it shows indie and art house cinema. It also continues to host live shows and concerts.
