Many Africans have adopted organized religions brought by Europeans, however, more than 100 million people still practice their traditional religions.

The Hadzabe Tribe, Tanzania

This tribe has been living as nomads for more than 10,000 years. The Hadzabe don’t have rules, calendars, homes and they don’t grow food. They exclusively depend on nature and wild food. There are no wedding traditions either. If a man and a woman sleep by the same fire for a while, they are considered husband and wife. They are also both free to leave if they don’t feel comfortable in the marriage.

The Himba, Namibia

The Himba live in a village situated in the Kunene region. Visiting will provide a sneak-peak into their traditions and religion. According to their customs, the men deal with “men problems”, legal and political matters, while the women’s job is taking care of the household. The Himba women aren’t allowed to bath in water, only take daily smoke baths.

The Zulu, South Africa

With 10 million members, Zulu is the largest ethnic group in South Africa. Although they are now mainly Christians, they have kept their belief in their ancestral spirits and in their supreme being. You can visit their villages, like Shakaland and Simunye Zulu which welcomes visitors.
