Cave Vrelo – Gorski kotar Croatia SAVE 20% on entry tickets with www.gorskikotarcard.com Formed in limestone almost 4 million years ago, the cave is rich in various cave formations, such as stalagmites and stalactites. The cave was accidentally discovered in the 1950s during the construction of the Bajer accumulation lake. There is a mountain spring running through the cave that, besides giving the cave a fairytale appeal, also floods the cave during particularly rainy periods. The cave is a home to numerous species of animals such as cave spiders, butterflies and bats. Vrelo is the only cave in Europe that is accessible to everyone, including children, elderly and wheelchair. This is due to the cave’s step free mild terrain. It is only a short car ride away from the Adriatic, making it a perfect destination for a day trip. With soothing shade and cool temperatures, Vrelo offers a much needed relief during sun-drenched summer months. In addition to cave exploration, you can spend the day enjoying the wonderful Bajer lake on a ferry, or visit the picturesque village of Fužine where people celebrate New Year at noon.
