Out of all the states in America, one of the most popular and prominent is none other than Texas, also known as the Lone Star state. One of the reasons it’s so popular is due to its history and iconic reflection of Southern culture. That being said, it’s pretty big as well, so if you’re thinking about going there, you’ll have to choose a particular city—and these three would be great options to start with.

Houston

You’ve probably heard the phrase “Houston, we have a problem,” and this is a reflection on the fact that NASA is based in Houston, Texas. Astronauts directly communicate to Houston when they’re in outer space, making this Texan city truly one of a kind. If you’re into that kind of stuff, visiting there is a no-brainer.

San Antonio

If you’re more into the iconic history of the South, look no further than San Antonio, which is the very location of the well-known Alamo. Beyond that, you can also enjoy the beautiful scenery at the Riverwalk.

Austin

Finally, one of the most popular cities in Texas is its capital, Austin. Here’s a city that is truly unlike any of its contemporaries, being that it’s a hotbed of progressive ideals and trendy culture. Given that the rest of Texas is a bit more traditional in nature, Austin is somewhat of a black sheep in the best of ways.

The owner of a fascinating history that dates back to the times of Native Americans, passes through a period of the Spanish Empire and ends up as a part of the United States, Texas is perhaps the most historically rich state in the United States. If you are a history buff, definitely add these three Texas landmarks to your travel itinerary the next time you head to the Lone Star State.

The Alamo

San Antonio is the home of Texas’s most famous historical site, the Alamo. A Spanish mission and fortress dating back to the 18th century, this structure was the host to one of the most pivotal battles in Texas’s fight to secede from Mexico in 1836, and can now be visited.

The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza

One of Texas’s darkest memories was the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on November 22nd, 1963 in Dallas. Lee Harvey Oswald took aim at the president from the sixth floor of the Texas School Book Depository, which has now been transformed into a memorial space and a museum about the infamous event.

San Jacinto Battleground

Located near Houston on Texas’s Gulf Coast is the San Jacinto Battleground, another key site in the Texas Revolution. In April 1836, the decisive battle that led to Texas gaining its independence from Mexico was held here. It is now a National Historic Monument.

Most people visiting Houston are there to explore its rich history of space exploration, but this city has something in store for everyone. Nature lovers will feel right at home in Texas’ largest city—especially if they decide to visit one of these three beautiful parks.

Hermann Park

If you want to fully explore Hermann Park, you should probably put an entire day aside. This gigantic park covers 445 acres, and it’s home to several of Houston’s must-see attractions, including Houston Zoo, Japanese Garden, Houston Museum of Natural Science, McGovern Lake, and so much more.

Memorial Park

Surpassingly enough, Hermann isn’t even Houston’s largest public park. That honor belongs to Memorial Park, which spans almost 1,500 acres of beautiful land, covered with lush trees, running trails, a golf course, and a botanical garden.

Discovery Green

Discovery Green covers 12 acres in downtown Houston and it’s one of the city’s best-equipped recreational areas. Walkways, fountains, dog runs, and public arts are just some of its amenities, but most people come here for Kinder Lake and frequent public events hosted on a large performance stage.

Located less than a mile away from NASA’s training facilities, this space-themed museum serves as the official visitor center of the NASA Johnson Space Center.

Their doors are open every day between 10 am and 5 pm, but it’s a good idea to check working hours on their official website since they sometimes stay open for longer for the Galaxy Lights special events.

Found nestled within the 800,000 acres of Big Bend National Park, West Texas, is the sublime Santa Elena canyon on the Mexican border. Let’s take a look at what marvels you can find there.

Dark Sky

Designated as a “dark sky park”, from this canyon you can experience sublime views of the Milky Way. There is next to no light pollution or clouds to dull the celestial scenes. The whole sky glows and makes you feel as if you were in another world.

Canyoning

The beautiful rock formations are ideal for adventurous hiking and climbing. But, because of the high temperatures and tall rocks, only very experienced rock climbers should attempt it and always with supervision.

Lake

The majestic lake shimmers below the great rocks of the canyon. During the day, it reflects the dazzling blue sky while at night it reaches itself up to the luminous heavens.

Dinosaur Bones

The site contains prehistoric fossils of primordial plants and animals as well as dinosaur bones.

Plants

The park is home to a number of rare plant species that are peculiar to the region. Among them are the desert marigold, the desert willow, rock nettle, and the candelilla plant.

Houston is one of the world’s no. 1 destination for astronomy lovers because it’s home to NASA’s leading training facility. If you’re looking forward to exploring NASA’s rich history of outer space, Space Center Houston is the place to be.

Space Center Houston has been around since 1992 and it went on to become the city’s top tourist attraction and a Smithsonian Affiliate museum. It’s the best place to explore the American history of space travel because it covers 250,000 square feet, filled with unique space-themed exhibits.

From Starship and Astronaut Gallery to Independence Plaza that features the world’s only Space Shuttle replica, Space Center Houston is an amazing experience for people of all ages. Its exhibits are both immersive and educational, and they even offer film and live presentations that will give you an insight into the astronauts’ lives and incredible missions.
