𝑚𝑜𝑐𝑘 𝑒𝑥𝑎𝑚 𝑢𝑝𝑑𝑎𝑡𝑒 🆀︎🆃🅳: did/do you sit any online exams this semester? What are your experiences with it? • [] Due to COVID, some chairs have switched to online examinations (even though normal in-person exams are allowed, I’ll actually be sitting 3 of them). For my syntax class, however, it’s going to be a mix of online single choice (true/false) questions and several complete sentence analyses that have do be done on paper, scanned and uploaded – all within 60 minutes. I sat the mock exam on Tuesday and apart from one minor misconfiguration everything worked fine. I’m really glad they gave us the chance to familiarize ourselves with the system before the real exam. Plus we’ll be provided with an “emergency” hotline in case something goes wrong during the exam. • What about you? Did or do you sit any online exams this semester? How’d they go for you? 𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑛𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑒𝑥𝑎𝑚 𝑝𝑟𝑒𝑝 🆀︎🆃🅳: do you write a study/revision plan before exam phase starts? • [] During winter semester, Christmas/New Year’s break is my signal to get started with revision for exams. In summer semester there’s no such break, so it can be a bit of a struggle to plan your revision – planning too early isn’t possible as you don’t know what other dates are approaching, but a month prior should be fine (depending on the number of exams, this semester I’m only sitting 4 compared to my usual 6-7). • I used a simple @goodnotesapp monthly calendar template to plan out my studying in July: I wrote down exam dates and other fixed deadlines/appointments (work, rowing etc.) and highlighted them in different colors. I also included upcoming assignments and when I would work on them, and then distributed my revision to the remaining free days. I didn’t write down when to study which chapter of a subject, that I would see individually when working on it. • Here are some additional tips: 1⃣ Leave room for time buffers, minimum one day per week! You never know what’s coming up and relying on having the time you actually planned might get you in trouble if something unexpected happens. (e.g. I left Wednesday completely empty of any studying bc I have a Zoom class, work, and rowing – if I do have some time left in the evening I can still work on something). 2⃣ Make an early start on the revision of your LAST exam (it’s already enough if your summary is done or you’ve started the first chapter). Why? I usually lose myself in studying for the next upcoming exam, and in the end realize there’s only a couple days left before the last one that I haven’t studied for yet. Having an early overview gives you some peace of mind. 3⃣ Just START! The beginning of exam prep is always the hardest (especially in summer) but once you’ve wrapped your brain around 1-2h of actually revising, the rest will hopefully come naturally! • Hope you found these tips helpful!
