Missouri may not be one of the most touristy states in the U.S., but you should consider paying it a visit if you want to explore America’s heartland. If you ever find yourself in this state, St. Louis is one of the cities you shouldn’t miss – especially since it’s home to the Gateway Arch.

In addition to being the enduring symbol of this city, the Gateway Arch also happens to be the tallest arch in the entire world. It’s been standing tall at 630 feet ever since 1967 when it opened its doors to the public and was meant to serve as the monument to the westward expansion of the United States.

Over half a century later, the Gateway Arch attracts millions of tourists to St. Louis, and it’s impossible to miss due to its monumental size. It’s a part of the Gateway Arch National Park, safely tucked away on the west bank of the Mississippi River.

If taking photos of the arch isn’t enough for you, you can also visit a museum and an old courthouse in its close proximity. You can also take a tram ride to the top, and get the best possible views of St. Louis from 630 feet above the ground.
