Have you ever just wanted to get away from it all?

If you’re looking for a place to visit that will have you as far as possible from all civilization (while still keeping your feet on dry land), there’s no better place to go than the island of Tristan da Cunha in the south Atlantic Ocean.

This British overseas territory is located over 1,500 miles from the coast of South Africa and over 2,000 miles off of the coast of Argentina, meaning that there is truly nothing close. What’s more is that it takes quite a journey to even get here, with the only way to access the island being a six-day boat trip from South Africa.

With a population of under 300, you’ll definitely be able to escape and just get away from it all while in Tristan da Cunha. Don’t think that there’s nothing to do on this remote island, however.

One of the best ways to get to know this land is to simply stay with and talk to its people. With no hotels or hostels, your best bet for lodging is to stay with a local family. They’ll likely prepare you a local feast or drive you around to some of the island’s highlights, such as its volcanic black sand beaches.

You can also choose to hike up the island’s volcano, which towers over 6,000 feet into the sky.

If you can visit this remote place, do so! It’s truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
