If You Go to Spain to Practice Spanish, You Might be in for a Surprise

If you know Spanish, you might be interested in going to Spain to talk to locals and practice. While this will work out great for you in most places, especially Madrid, if you want to venture out to other regions you might not be in such good luck.

Although everyone in Spain speaks Spanish, you won’t necessarily hear them speaking it out on the street or in cafes. This is because there are many other official and unofficial languages in Spain, some that couldn’t be farther from Spanish.

For example, in Basque Country and parts of Navarre Basque is spoken, called Euskera in their native tongue. But, not even just one version of Euskera is spoken!

Throughout the regions, there is variation in many of the words so even then it can be difficult.

Caminar es de las cosas que mas me gusta hacer en la vida. Hace años cuando me enteré sobre este camino, no dude ni un solo minuto en hacerlo algún día. Mis expectativas siempre fueron muy altas, y es increíble como esas expectativas fueron superadas. Decidir hacer esto sola fue muy importante. Siendo una persona tímida, estoy impresionada de todas las personas que conocí, personas de todas las edades, nacionalidades, culturas. Con ellos aprendí todos los días algo nuevo. También tuve que aprender a convivir con ellos porque en cada pueblo tuve que compartir baños, piezas, cocina y mesa con estas personas. Si me preguntan, el camino es duro. Pero cualquiera lo puede hacer, no se necesita una condición física, solamente se necesita la voluntad. Hay días buenos y hay días no tan buenos, días que tienen sentido y otros no. Pero al final, creo que es una experiencia que va a marcar mi vida por siempre. También aprendí mucho de mi cuerpo. Después de una semana, ya sabía cuando pasaban 5, 10, 20, 30 kms según las sensaciones, cansancio y dolores que se sienten caminando. Pero lo lindo es que siempre que estas cansado o con ganas de rendirte, llega alguien y te dice “buen camino”. Y eso nuevamente te da las fuerzas para seguir caminando. Agradezco todo lo que pase y vivi en este camino. Estoy inmensamente feliz. #santiagodecompostela #caminodesantiago

If you go across to country to the northwest region called Galicia, you can enjoy amazing seafood and hear their native tongue, Galician, or Galego.

In newer cities like Vigo, you won’t find it as often, but in the popular tourist town of Santiago de Compostela, you will find almost everyone exclusively speaking in Galego.

So make sure before you visit you brush up on tour Spanish and try to learn some basics of the other languages as well!
