Prague, Czech Republic, is considered one of the most affordable major destinations in Europe. Still, a visit to this magnificent Eastern European city won’t come cheap unless you know a few tips and tricks that will help you save some money. Continue reading to discover the best ways to explore Prague on a budget.

Visit During Winter

Prague doesn’t see a lot of tourists during the winter season, so the flights and accommodation will be way cheaper. For some dates, you’ll pay less than half the prices during peak season. As an added bonus, you’ll get to enjoy the sight of the city’s beautiful buildings covered in snow. Just make sure to avoid the holiday season because this is the time the prices jump again.

Use Public Transportation and Get Multi-Day Tickets

The best way to make your way around Prague is walking because you can soak up all of its charm that way. However, if your accommodation is away from the city center or you just want to save your legs, public transportation is a way to go. There are multiple options available, including metro, trams, and busses, and all of them are reliable and cheap. If you intend to use public transportation often, get a multi-day ticket that comes with significant savings and allows you to use all the available means of public transportation.

Look for Specials and Daily Menus at Restaurants

A lot of Prague restaurants offer discounted specials and daily menus. These options are always a lot cheaper than standard offerings and can get you a tasty and filling meal for less than $5. Also, avoid restaurants near popular tourist attractions as they have higher prices and food is usually not that good.

Look for Exchange Rates Online Before You Exchange Your Money

If you want to exchange US dollars or any other currency for Czech koruna, the Czech Republic’s official currency, don’t simply walk into the first exchange you see. Instead, look for the average exchange rate online and then look for an exchange that offers something close. There are a lot of exchange offices in Prague that prey on unassuming tourists and offer terrible exchange rates that could cost you hundreds of dollars.

Prague is a beautiful city all year round but at Christmas, the old Czech town becomes a truly magical place to behold. Here are six wonderful activities you can do in Prague during December that will cost you less than a pint of lager.

Check Out A Holiday Market

Holiday markets pop all over Prague in December. Even if you don’t feel like buying any of the handmade crafts on offer, the atmosphere will definitely put you in a festive mood. The smell of roasted chestnuts and mulled wine fills the air and the Christmas lights are a picture.

Ice Skate In Old Town

If you head down to Old Town, you can hit up the ice rink in the old square. This is free if you have the skates, but it only costs 100 CZK to rent a pair.

Watch The Lamplighting

In December, a lamplighter dressed in period clothing lights the lamps along Prague’s iconic Charles Bridge. It is pretty special and won’t cost you a cent.

Dress Up For Mikuláš

St. Nicholas Day falls on December 5. You will see people dressed as angels, devils, and saints wondering the streets of Prague. It’s a fun festival to get involved in but it is equally fun to watch the locals take part in the Mikuláš activities.

Visit Prague’s Museums

There are dozens of charming museums in Prague and many of them are free or very cheap. If you want to keep out of the cold, there are plenty you can check out in the center.

Walk Through Cesky Krumlov

Cesky Krumlov is an incredibly scenic Czech town. In December, when the snow covers the ground, it is even more spectacular. You will get enough holiday photos to last a lifetime.
