Further afield, there are some stunning beaches within a ten-minute drive, and the aforementioned Picos mountains can be reached by car within an hour.
The final destination on the famous pilgrim route, the Camino de Santiago, this ancient town offers much. Visit its famous cathedral, which has some stunning art on display, or stand in the square outside and witness the reverence of the pilgrims who have walked so far to be here. Sample some of the local cuisines, which include pork and bean stew, fried fish, and cider, or take a day trip out to the Galician countryside.

The centerpiece of Covadonga is its fabulous cathedral, but don’t miss the sanctuary to the Virgin Mary which is carved into the mountainside. If you fancy climbing a mountain, there are routes of medium difficulty up to local peaks from the town. You will need a car to reach Covadonga, but the drive up through the mountains is worth the trip itself.
