North Macedonia is one of the most underrated countries in Europe, but it’s definitely worth visiting for its nature alone. The list of natural wonders you can find here is pretty much endless, and these three are a good place to start.

Lake Ohrid

One of Europe’s deepest and oldest lakes is located on the mountainous border between North Macedonia and Albania, and it’s truly a sight to behold. Make sure to check out the Church of St. John at Kaneo during your visit and take a moment to learn more about the lake’s impressive biodiversity.

Matka Canyon

Due to its close proximity to the Macedonian capital of Skopje, Matka Canyon became one of the country’s top tourist attractions. In addition to being popular with hikers and fans of water sports, Matka is home to several historic churches and monasteries that you can explore during your visit.

Mavrovo National Park

Nature lovers also shouldn’t skip the country’s largest national park, which covers an area of 300 square miles. There’s something for everyone at Mavrovo, because this specious national park is filled with mountain trails, deep canyons, and crystal-clear lakes.

Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia, is one of the most intercultural cities in Europe. You can witness its amazing food and culture in just one day if you know where to go in this bridge-divided city.

The Old Bazaar

Just across the bridge from the main square, you will find the biggest bazaar in the country. Here you can visit the art gallery, buy some souvenirs or enjoy a hot bowl of beef stew in one of the most authentic places in Skopje: ‘Kafana Sarajevo’!

Zhena Borec Park

If you are looking for a nice place to rest your head, go to this park. It’s devoted to the partisan women (that’s what the name means) and today it’s the main attraction for locals who gather and play chess, keeping the neighborhood spirit alive.

The Clock That Stopped

Skopje was hit by a great earthquake back in 1963 at exactly 5:17 am. The clock on the main train station stopped working at that moment exactly, and it’s still here to remind us of the great tragedy. The train station is now a Skopje museum.

Deep in the south of the tiny country of North Macedonia lays the charming city of Bitola. The city is known as the city of the consuls because during the Ottoman Empire it was the place where the consuls from Europe and the Ottoman Empire would meet. Even today, a large part of the consular offices of Macedonia are still here.

Being the second largest city in the country Bitola has a lot to offer. Bitola is known as a cultural city, especially in summer when the city actually transforms into an open-air festival. Cinema, theater, music, independent performers, art shows, you name it, Bitola has it. Of course, when you are in a new city you have to try the local food. Warm tripe soup in the winter or wild grilled mushrooms with some garlic sauce to deep is just the beginning of the long menu you are going to be offered anywhere you go.

Тhe mountains and the hills surrounding Bitola are another special story. Home of numerous natural lakes, breath-taking views and rare flora you can find only in the Pelister national park,  might be a few more reasons to visit Bitola.
