Traveling is an incredible thing to do at any point in your life. It’s so much fun to plan a trip with friends or family, but solo travel is a unique and exhilarating experience that many people find helps them gain new perspectives on life. Some parts of the world are better than others for solo travel, and one of the best countries is New Zealand. Here are some reasons why it makes such a good solo travel destination.

It’s Safe

Many popular travel destinations are exciting but can be quite risky, especially when traveling alone. New Zealand however, is known for being one of the safest countries and has low crime rates compared to other areas of the world. Knowing this will help you feel more confident when traveling around by yourself.

Accessible Language

English is one of the most widely spoken languages worldwide, with many people learning it as a second language. This is the most commonly spoken language in New Zealand, meaning that it will be much easier to communicate with others while there, whether in a store or meeting people in a hostel.

Stunning Sights

On top of all the practical reasons that New Zealand is so great for solo travelers, it also has some of the most incredible and exciting landscapes to explore. Fans of the Lord of the Rings movie franchise will know how beautiful and wild the natural spaces are there, but these landscapes will take anyone’s breath away.

New Zealand has some of the most amazing natural scenery in the world. Amidst this rich tapestry, there are a few places that don’t receive as much attention as their beauty might warrant. Here are three reasons why you should visit Wanaka, New Zealand’s best-kept secret.

Lake Wanaka

The small town of Wanaka in the South Island of New Zealand is nestled on Lake Wanaka, a large body of freshwater surrounded by mountains. Lake Wanaka is a fantastic reason to stay in Wanaka on its own, the walks around the lake are very accessible but also stunning. If you visit in Autumn, Wanaka has some of the best auburn colors as the trees begin to lose their leaves.

Roy’s Peak

Roy’s Peak is a classic activity for anyone who visits Wanaka. It takes about 2-3 hours to climb from the base to summit, and there are absolutely stunning views of Lake Wanaka and the surrounding mountains all the way up. Once you reach the summit, you can either climb down, or continue along a great ridge walk that takes in more of the amazing mountains in this area.

Mount Aspiring National Park

If you have a car with you, Wanaka is only about 50 miles from Mount Aspiring National Park. This is one of the most beautiful space in New Zealand, and Mount Aspiring is New Zealand’s second highest mountain. Lots of scenes from Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings Trilogy were shot here, so it is a must-see for any Middle Earth fan.

The list of contenders for the upcoming Academy Awards has recently been unveiled, with The Power of the Dog leading the way with 12 nods. This moody western drama wouldn’t be the same without its scenic landscapes, but can you guess where was it originally filmed?

Jane Campion’s latest directorial effort is set at an isolated farm in Montana and it centers on an eccentric rancher whose life turns upside down after his brother brings his new wife home. Cinematography is one of The Power of the Dog’s strongest suits, but this film simply wouldn’t be the same without the scenic filming locations that served as one of its most important supporting players.

Campion didn’t stray far away from home when looking for a place to film her magma opus. Instead of scouting for locations in Montana, she settled for New Zealand, with the Maniototo region serving as the backdrop for some of the film’s most memorable scenes. A farm in Hawkdun Ranges was renovated to resemble the Western-style Burbank Ranch, while the interior scenes were mostly filmed at the sound stage in Auckland.

If some of the film’s beautiful scenery looks familiar, it’s probably because some of the locations previously appeared in the Lord of the Rings series. The coastal towns of Dunedin and Oamaru and their surroundings gave this film a special charm, and you should consider exploring their natural beauty if you ever find yourself in New Zealand.

Wellington is a fantastic city on the Southern Tip of the North Island of New Zealand. The city has a flourishing nightlife as well as being a cultural hub of New Zealand. Here are three reasons why you should visit Wellington.

Mount Victoria

Mount Victoria is a significant hill not far from the coast in Wellington city center. It climbs over 600 feet above sea level and offers amazing views over the city of Wellington once you reach the summit. It was also used to film scenes in Lord of the Rings and offers mountain biking trails for the adventurous.

Te Papa

Te Papa is the National Museum of New Zealand and offers some incredible exhibitions that are well worth a visit. With almost 2 million yearly visitors, it is one of the most popular museums in New Zealand and has a lot to offer for everyone.

The Atmosphere

Wellington has a great nightlife and, on the right night, it has a raucous and festival-like atmosphere. Cuba Street has many independent bars and cafes which are worth stopping at. Sometimes referred to as ‘Wellywood’, Wellington is reminiscent of San Francisco with its trams, steep hills, stunning coastline, and thriving cultural scene.
