]]> Mahatma Gandhi is India’s national hero, the leader of a pacific resistance against British rule and a man who inspired fights for civil rights and freedom all over the world.

Anyone who visits New Delhi and is interested in learning more about this extraordinary man should add Gandhi Smriti to their list of places to see.

Located on Tees January Road in front of the National Defense College, this is the spot where Gandhi spent the final 144 days of his life before he was assassinated. Now, it is a spot to learn about the work that Gandhi did for Indian independence and civil rights and hosts a multimedia museum where you can learn more about what he did.

With free admission for all and open every day except for Mondays and national holidays, you can spend time exploring the house where Gandhi lived for nearly half a year as you explore the exhibitions that tell the story of his life.

Outside of the home, a solemn spot known as the “Martyr’s Column,” remembers the spot where Gandhi’s life was taken from him as a punishment for his fight for freedom.

Be sure to make time to pay a visit to this extraordinary place if you are ever lucky enough to visit New Delhi.

]]> Lotus Temple is one of New Delhi’s top tourist attractions, and here’s a couple of fun facts that will make you see this flower-like structure in a whole new light.

Unique Shape

The Lotus Temple owes its name to its unique structure, reminiscent of a flower it was named after. It’s composed of 27 free-standing marble “petals”, which form nine sides in clusters of three.

Baháʼí House of Worship

Lotus Temple has nine-sided circular shape just like other Baháʼí Houses of Worship – they welcome people of all religions to gather, reflect, and worship, but only scriptural texts are allowed to be read or chanted.

Solar Power

This is the first temple in Delhi to use solar power, and it saves a significant amount of money in electricity costs this way – approximately 120,000 rupees per month.

Tourist Attraction

Lotus Temple was crowned as one of the most visited buildings in the world at the beginning of the 21st century and even managed to surpass the Taj Mahal with a number of visitors on several occasions.

One becomes immaculate and pure, by associating with the Saints, O Nanak, and taking the Protection of the Transcendent Lord. ||1|| The burning of the heart is not dispelled at all, by sandalwood paste, the moon, or the cold season. It only becomes cool, O Nanak, by chanting the Name of the Lord. ||2|| ☬ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿਆਖਿਆ ☬ : ਜੋ ਸੰਤ ਜਨ ਗੋਪਾਲ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਬਣਾ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਦਿਆਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤਪਸ਼ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਈਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਅੱਜ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਖਵਾਕ: ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮ: ੪ ॥ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਹੈ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥ ਨਾਮੋ ਚਿਤਵੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਪੜੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਗਈ ਬਿਲਾਇ ॥ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਨਾਮੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਤਿਸਨਾ ਭੁਖ ਸਭ ਜਾਇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੇ ਰਤਿਆ ਨਾਮੋ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥ {ਅੰਗ 653} Within the Gurmukh is peace and tranquility; his mind and body are absorbed in the Naam, the Name of the Lord. He contemplates the Naam, he studies the Naam, and he remains lovingly absorbed in the Naam. He obtains the treasure of the Naam, and his anxiety is dispelled. Meeting with the Guru, the Naam wells up, and his thirst and hunger are completely relieved.
