A French paradise in the Caribbean, Martinique has many beauty spots. It might not be your first idea when it comes to tourist attractions, but this island has some iconic statues and public art worth seeing.

Maman Dlo

Not quite on the island, this is a world-famous sculpture installed underwater. A tribute to the sea and its protector. The name derives from the French version of “Mother Water” and the sculpture itself is a siren. Many go for short underwater ventures when visiting the island just to see this wonder by the artist Laurent Valere.

Memorial de l’Anse Caffard

Also the work of Valere, this work is a touching monument of Martinique’s past as part of the slave trade. The sculpture sits on top of a hill and you can enjoy it with the spectacular island view as the backdrop. The work was completed in 1998 and was part of the French West Indies 150th emancipation anniversary.

Larmes de Fonte

Another memorial, this one commemorates the people of St. Pierre who were killed by a volcano. This intense piece is three and a half meters high and is made of large iron chains welded together. The piece was created in 1996 by the artist ARMAN.
