Marseille is one of France’s largest and most historically important cities. Situated on the Mediterranean, it provides the rest of France with lots of seafood and has held strategic significance for centuries. It also has several idyllic beaches that make it a place to visit for all the family.

Beaches

The Plage de l’Huveaune and Plage des Catalans are two of the most popular beaches near the center of Marseille. With clear blue water and golden sand, it is easy to spend a whole day at these beaches. If you want a quieter spot, the Parc National des Calanques is a 40-minute drive from Marseille and offers stunning beaches and remote coves that anyone can enjoy exploring.

Food

Marseille is one of the largest fishing cities in Europe and provides Paris with the bulk of its seafood. The cuisine in Marseille is therefore very fish-centered, and bouillabaisse is one of the most popular dishes that has originated from the city and incorporates a large variety of locally caught seafood. A vegetarian dish that all the family can enjoy is the pistou soup, which consists of Mediterranean vegetables and pasta with pistou- made of crushed garlic, olive oil, and basil.

Marseille is a beautiful port city in France that has been an active trade city since 600 BC! There are so many amazing things to see and do there, but there’s something very special about Marseille that a lot of people don’t know about, but it’s been around for at least 600 years so it’s worth seeing!

Marseille is actually really famous for their soap!

Marseille soap or Savon de Marseille is so special because it’s made in a really unique way with different ingredients that you wouldn’t find in your normal soap from the store. Soap from Marseille is made with just three ingredients: water from the Meditteranean Sea, olive oil or sometimes another kind of oil, and alkaline ash from sea plants.

The soap from Marseille is the epitome of using local ingredients to create something amazing since everything found in the soap is native to the city.

The way the soap is made is really special, and can often take up to 1 month to make. With everything in our bathrooms being mass-produced and usually full of chemicals, it’s such a cool experience to use something with simple ingredients and a recipe that has changed in 600 years. So if you’re ever visiting France, don’t forget to stop by Marseille and pick up some soap!

Marseille’s Vieux Port is located smack-dab in the center of the city. It is a pedestrian-oriented area that is located around the city’s natural Mediterranean harbor that has served as a hub for seafarers since antiquity. Visitors can marvel at its beautiful blue water and the fishing boats and yachts that dominate it.

Also located in Marseille near the Vieux Port area is the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations. This museum is located inside the boundaries of an old fort that used to protect the city and gives a state-of-the-art look at Marseille and other Mediterranean cities’ history and development.

Another must-see for visitors to Marseille is the Notre Dame de la Garde Basilica. Located on top of Marseille’s highest point and with a privileged position overlooking the sea, this unique cathedral was built in the mid-1800s and features the colorful and avant-garde Byzantine Revival architectural style.

Finally, be sure to check out Les Calanques National Park if you’re ever in Marseille. Located right next to the city, this is a beautiful place to enjoy the rugged, natural Mediterranean landscape and marvel at the clean water on its virgin beaches.
