]]> The Portuguese capital city has known a long and rich history. Let’s take a look at some of the most interesting and varied museums in Lisbon that document it.

National Museum of Ancient Art

The colossal National Museum of Ancient Art documents Portugal’s varied art history from the Middle Ages through to the 19th century. Expect to find historical paintings, sculptures, textiles, gold and silverware, ceramics, furniture, and much more.

Museum of the Orient

Established in 2008 as a means of opening a dialogue discussing Portugal’s historic influence on the east, Lisbon’s Museum of the Orient contains artworks dating from the Neolithic period through to the early 20th century.

Berardo Collection Museum

Set up by the businessman and philanthropist José Manuel Rodrigues Berardo, this museum is home to a supremely impressive collection of modern artwork. The collection includes paintings by Pablo Picasso, Francis Bacon, and Andy Warhol.

Calouste Gulbenkian Museum

This museum displays the astounding art collection of philanthropist Calouste Gulbenkian. Composed of more than 6,000 works, the collection spans ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, the Far East, and 18th century France. There are also works by Ruben, Rembrandt, Degas, and a series of illuminated Medieval manuscripts.

Me surpreendi ontem, assim como vem ocorrendo nos últimos 30 dias na Europa, com este quadro no Museu Calouste Gulbenkian em Lisboa. Já o conhecia de livros mas não pensei que daria de cara com ele fisicamente ao entrar distraidamente numa sala. Pintado por Jean-Baptiste André Gautier d'Agoty, vemos uma cena íntima da última favorita de Luís XV, madame du Barry, Jeanne Bécu (1743-1793), em seu quarto, pegando uma xícara de café servida por seu criado Zamor, um menino escravizado aos 11 anos de idade em Bangladesh. Zamor foi dado ou comprado pelo rei da França que o deu de presente à condessa. O pagen foi batizado como Louis Benoit (1762-1820), envolveu-se com as ideias de Rosseau e acabou se tornando um revolucionário francês. Durante a Revolução Francesa, denunciou seguidamente Madame du Barry às autoridades. Da primeira vez, ela foi libertada, mas, da segunda, ela acabou sendo processada e condenada à morte com Zamor participando diretamente do processo. Após a morte de sua senhora, Zamor também acabou sendo preso pelos Girondinos, mas conseguiu se libertar, fugiu de Paris e só retornou em 1815, vivendo na cidade até sua morte como professor. #zamor #caloustegulbenkianmuseum #caloustegoulbenkian #arcolisboa2019 #madamedubarry
