Volcanic crater lakes are a true wonder of nature, and Ecuador is home to quite a few. One of the most stunning lakes you can find in this country is Quilotoa, which was formed by a volcanic eruption that took place about 600 years ago.

Quilotoa is a popular day trip destination from Quito because it’s located three hours away from the capital of Ecuador. You can take a ride on your own, join one of the local tours, or take a bus to Latacunga from Quito and then another one from Latacunga to Quilotoa.

Quilotoa Lake is truly picturesque thanks to its turquoise color, which is the result of dissolved minerals. If you’re thinking of staying for longer than a single day, booking a stay in one of the local hostels and visiting craft workshops in the surrounding area is also an option.

Quilotoa is especially popular with passionate hikers thanks to its many challenging trails. You’ll have to hike for at least half an hour to reach the viewpoint above the lake, but it takes four to five hours to hike along the rim of the crater and enjoy the views at the turquoise waters of the lake.
