Behold the mighty landscape of Laguna Colorada, one of the natural wonders in southwest Bolivia.

Internationally known as the red lagoon, this shallow salt lake is a part of the almost-barren and otherworldly Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve, which belongs in the Andes mountain range and is a major tourist attraction in the region.

The vibrant coloration of the lake, that shifts between deep blue and dark red, is caused by sediments and algae in the water that is only one meter deep.

But there’s something else that makes Laguna Colorada a favorite spot among natives and tourists alike – the lake can boast with hosting hundreds of some of the rarest flamingo species in the world who come to feed on the abundance of plankton in the lake.
