]]>Inhotim was founded by the Brazilian businessman Bernardo Paz, who built it on his 5,000-acre property. Before Brazil’s biggest contemporary art center opened its doors to the public in 2006, Paz used it to house his own art collection but eventually decided other people deserve to see it.
As the years went by, the size and natural beauty of Inhotim won countless acclaimed artists over, including Hélio Oiticica, Yayoi Kusama, and Anish Kapoor. They’re amongst many who agreed to display their art on the grounds of Inhotim, which also houses a sprawling botanical garden, in addition to dozen art pavilions with around 500 larger-than-life works of art.
Inhotim’s natural beauty and artistic value attracted over three million visitors to its grounds, despite the fact it’s not so easy to reach. It’s located about two hours away from Belo Horizonte by car, in Brumadinho (Minas Gerais). If you’re planning to visit it, make sure to be there 9:30 AM–4:30 PM, Wednesday to Sunday.
