Many people will tell you that visiting New York City in the winter is something special. It is almost like the city adopts a new personality and becomes even more magical than it already is.

There are lots of things you can do in NYC in the winter that will bring you a lot of fun. But definitely one of the more exciting ones is ice skating. After the cold weather sets in, ice skating rinks pop up on almost every corner, setting the stage for a perfect way to spend your afternoon or evening. These are the top ice skating rinks you should visit in NYC.

The Rink at the Rockefeller Center

We’ll start with the classic, the No. 1 spot, the place where everyone wants to skate. The Rink at Rockefeller Center is synonymous with ice skating culture in NYC and that is for a reason. You get to skate under the statue of Golden Prometheus and be a part of one of the most recognizable New York City traditions. The rink operates from early November to mid-April and is open every day between 9 a.m. and 12 a.m.

Wollman Rink

Located in Central Park, Wollman Rink provides a unique experience. You get to skate while surrounded by tall trees and even taller buildings, which team up to deliver quite impressive scenery. The experience becomes even better at night when the surrounding lights create a great atmosphere. Wollman Rink operates from late October to early April and is usually open between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m.

The Rink at Manhattan West

This is one of the newer rinks in New York City, but it is becoming quite popular among locals, and the tourists seem to follow. It offers a great overall experience that includes an NHL shop and private skating lessons by Olympian skaters. The rink operates from November to April and is open from 2 p.m. until 9 p.m.

Over 22 million tourists visit Budapest each year and for the right reason. With no shortage of activities, food, and bars, Budapest is a city that makes you want to come back again and again. The city is also famous for some of Europe’s biggest attractions.

Largest Ice Rink

Europe’s largest ice rink is located right in the city in front of Vadjahuyad Castle. In the summer it is a big pond with boating and duck seeing, but in the winter it turns into a giant ice rink. Light shows, live music, and food vendors are some of the activities going on while skating around with hundreds of other people.

Largest Thermal Bath

For a city so famous for its thermal baths, it’s only fitting that the largest in Europe will be here as well. The Szechenyi thermal bath is conveniently located right next to the ice rink and is a great way to combine a cold winter activity with a relaxing spa day. With many pools both inside and outside, there is plenty of space even on busy weekends.

Largest Synagogue

Although there were big Jewish communities throughout much of Europe, and many much larger than Budapest, Europe’s biggest synagogue is right in the city center. Completed in 1959, the Dohany Street Synagogue can hold up to 3,000 people and is a unique combination of European and Islamic architecture.

One of the best things about winter is that empty squares around the world suddenly transform into ice skating rinks, and London just happens to be the home to some of the most magical ones we’ve ever seen.

Somerset House Ice Rink

Somerset House is one of London’s many top tourist attractions that turn into spacious ice rinks once winter comes.  If you’re not a huge fan of ice skating, you can enjoy delicious local foods and drinks on Somerset grounds, as well.

Tower of London Ice Rink

Tower of London also serves as a backdrop to one of the busiest ice rinks in London. Nothing quite like exploring 1000 years of history at this historic royal palace and relaxing by taking a spin on the ice afterward.

Natural History Museum Ice Rink

Natural History Museum is also one of London’s must-see attractions, and it’s equally magical from the outside – especially during the holiday season! Glistening skating area, Christmas decorations, and festive treats really give this place a special charm.
