New Zealand is home to countless locations where scenes from the iconic fantasy series Lord of the Rings were filmed. There are many beautiful scenic tours that you can choose to take, but the most magical of them all is the tour of Hobbiton, also known as the Shire.

Where Is It Located?

All of the scenes in Hobbiton were filmed in Waikato, New Zealand, on a sheep farm that stretches out to 1,250 acres. Called the Alexander farm, it was a match made in heaven when Peter Jackson first laid eyes on it.

What Can You Do There?

If you manage to make it all the way out there, you’ll be wowed by the vivid green rolling hills and authentic Hobbit holes. You can even enjoy an ale at the Green Dragon Inn!

A Brief History

After the filming for Lord of the Rings wrapped up, the set was destroyed and left alone. But when the movies became incredibly successful, the fans expressed a strong desire to visit the Shire.

After The Hobbit trilogy was filmed in 2009, the production company made the decision to build permanent Hobbit Holes—44 to be exact. Knowing full well that fans would come from far and wide to visit, they created a full-on mockup of the real Shire. So what are you waiting for? It’s time for an adventure!
