]]> These days, we are all doing a lot of traveling close to home and playing the tourist in our own cities. For those based in British Columbia, Canada there is a castle renowned for its garden. For others, Hatley castle is a good reason to plan a future visit to this region.

Hatley Castle may look pretty familiar from the outside, as it was used as the facade for The X-Men or what is known as Professor Xavierโ€™s School For Gifted Youngsters. While the castle itself is beautiful, one could argue that its surrounding gardens are even more enchanting.ย 

The Formal Gardens

The gardens surrounding the castle are all themed. There is a classic Italian garden, which consists of perfectly symmetrical ornamental rose planters, and precisely cut grass. The Japanese garden features a number of maples, and some small Bonsai trees. The rose garden is a classic English one, and there are a wide variety of roses from around the world.

Touring the Gardens

At present, you can go on a free self-guided tour of the gardens. This is available from 12:00 to 4:00 PM daily. This is a great way to spend a couple of hours, and get to learn about the history of the castle and its surroundings.
